A desperate chase commenced through the cloudbase until the German jet prepared to land, whereupon Fairbanks sent 4U+DH down in flames after a single short burst of his four 20mm cannon.

Return of the Heroes by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Return of the Heroes by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Spitfire of 610 Squadron which has been damaged during combat during the height of the Battle of Britain is shown over the white cliffs of Dover. No. 610 (County of Chester) Squadron of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force's first major combat with the Luftwaffe was on 27th May when a Heinkel bomber protected by about 40 Me110s, was engaged. The combat which followed saw the Heinkel and three Me110 fighters being shot down. Throughout August 610 Squadron was involved in bitter fighting over the Channel and Home Counties of England. During the Battle of Britain No.610 Squadron operated from Biggin Hill, Hawkinge, and, on one occasion, from Croydon. The Squadron put up a terrific show and 40 enemy aircraft were confirmed as having been destroyed by 610 Squadron during August. The loss to the Squadron was eleven pilots killed during the battle.

Oswald Boelcke by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Oswald Boelcke by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Hauptmann Oswald Boelcke was a shining example of everything that a fighter pilot should be, but his real legacy was his set of rules - Dicta Boelcke - that he devised for air combat, outlining techniques and tactics that became the standard for many generations of fighter pilots to come. He is shown in the aircraft in which he lost his life on 28th October 1916 when his all-black Albatross D.I was involved in a collision with his own wingman. Boelckes final tally was 40 victories.

Major Edward Mannock by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Despite having sight in just one eye, Major Edward Mick Mannock was to become one of the most decorated and celebrated aces of World War 1, bringing down an official 61 enemy aircraft in just eighteen months before himself being brought down in flames by enemy ground fire. He was reluctant to add shared kills to his tally, so his actual total of victories is recorded at 73. His decorations include the VC, DSO and 2 Bars, MC and Bar and he is depicted here diving on enemy aircraft in SE5a D278 of 74 Sqn in April, 1918.

Lloyd C.V by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Lloyd C.V by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Austro-Hungarian Lloyd C.V was a two-seat observation aircraft which was unconventional both in appearance and construction. Its unusually-shaped wings were not fabric covered, but were laminated in plywood for strength and lightness. This innovation, however, caused great problems with maintenance, battle damage repair and structural fatigue caused by moisture building up inside the wing section. Despite its faults, the C.V was a fast and streamlined machine that acquitted itself well during its brief career, 144 of the type being produced by the Lloyd and WKF factories in 1917.

Having converted to the Messerschmitt Bf.109G with 150° Gruppo in 1943, Ugo Drago opted to ally himself with the Repubblica Sociale Italiana when the armistice was announced, taking command of 1a Squadriglia which also re-equipped with the Bf.109G. Big Vic by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Big Vic by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Originally conceived by Sir Frederick Handley Page as a jet bomber as long ago as 1945, the project that would evolve into the HP.80 was to become one of the RAF's most enduring types. Named the Victor, the prototype first took to the air in December 1952, entering service with the RAF in 1957. Incredibly, the last Victor was retired in 1993, the type having metamorphosed from bomber to tanker in the course of its long career, perhaps its most notable achievement being support for the longest-range bombing mission in history when a Vulcan bombed the runway at Port Stanley, Falkland Islands, in 1982, flying from Ascension Island.

Celebrating its 50th year of faithful service in 2012, the Vickers VC10 has proved to be one of the most enduring types in British aviation. The final role for these elegant veterans has been to provide mid-air refueling for the RAF, as typified here by C.1K XV106 'W' of 101 Sqn, Brize Norton. Retirement is planned for March 2013 for the final few serving aircraft, closing a significant chapter in the history of jet age.

No Contest by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

No Contest by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Whilst attacking a temporary airfield North of Stendal on 22nd April 1945, a group of 198 Sqn Typhoons led by Sqn Ldr N J Durrant were surprised to find themselves confronted by that rarest of fighters, Focke-Wulf's awesome Ta.152, one of them piloted by the great Willi Reschke of Stab / JG301, flying 'Black 13'. In the words of Sqn Ldr Durrant: 'The first wave of Typhoons had broken up the airfield surface with 500lb bombs and started some fires. I spotted some of the enemy trying to get airborne through the smoke and as I made a low pass, another Focke-Wulf passed me from behind at great speed. Thinking this would be an easy 'kill', I fired a short burst, but the enemy was gone. I remember thinking that there must be something wrong with my own machine because I felt like I was standing still. Only later did I learn what we had encountered. Thank God the war ended when it did.'

A New Shape in the Sky by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

A New Shape in the Sky by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Junkers Ju.287 V1 bomber prototype was a typical example of Germany's research into advanced aerodynamics at the end of World War II. Featuring forward swept wings and four Jumo 004B-1 Orkan axial-flow turbojets, this extraordinary aircraft made several successful flights before the project was curtailed by the war's end. RS+RA is shown on a test flight, carrying a cine camera in front of the fin to record airflow by means of wool tufts glued to the wings and fuselage sides. The characteristics of forward swept wings are only now being re-evaluated, 70 years after Junkers' first tentative steps into the unknown.
