By Dawn's Light by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Consolidated Model 28 PBY Catalina was so successful in its definitive form that it went on to become the most extensively built flying boat of all time. Here, a 210 Squadron Catalina Mk IVA from RAF Sullom Voe, Shetland, has located two weary downed aircrew, drained but grateful after a long night in the North Atlantic swell.

Breakout. Amiens Raid by Mosquitos by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Breakout. Amiens Raid by Mosquitos by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

When De Havilland built the prototype DH.98 Mosquito (E-0234) they did so as an act of the purest faith in their design since the Air Ministry had already dismissed the companys proposal for their all-wood aircraft as impractical and unworkable. However, when E-0234 first flew on 25th November 1940, it demonstrated remarkably smooth handling characteristics and its speed, as expected, was outstanding. Here at last was a bomber which, in a straight line, could outfly even the Spitfire, giving rise to such nicknames as Wooden Wonder and, succicntly The Aeroplane. With such an aircraft, it was soon realised, many new possibilities were laid open to the RAF, among them the chance to initiate precision raids whereupon carefully selected isolated targets could be attacked with pinpoint accuracy. Just such a raid took place on 18th February 1944, involving 18 Mosquitoes of Nos 64 and 487 Squadrons in an operation on the jail at Amiens, France, where a large number of the French Resistance we.........

En route to the Ruhr Dams on the night of 16/17 May 1943, P/O W C Townsend, demonstrating great skill, flew his aircraft, ED886(G) 'O'- Orange below tree-top height through a forest firetrap on his way to the Ennepe Dam, a feat carried out by moonlight alone. AJ-O made it successfully to its target where the Upkeep bomb was observed to hit the dam, but with no effect, before returning safely to base the following morning.

Dogfight over Asch, Belgium, 09.20 a.m., New Years Day, 1st January 1945 by David Pentland. (PC)

As the four P51D Mustangs of Major William T Haltons Yellow Flight, 487th Fighter Squadron took off from Asch, they found themselves in the middle of a massive German attack. That New Years Day the Luftwaffe had launched hundreds of aircraft in low level raids against the allied airfields across Northern France and Belgium. The unexpected take-off by the 487th however, ended Jagdgeswader 11s chances of success, with Yellow Flight alone claiming 9 enemy aircraft destroyed.

Vfw Emil Schape by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Vfw Emil Schape by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Pioneers of wooden fuselages, LFG Roland honed their considerable skills in fighter design throughout World War 1, culminating in the excellent D.VI as depicted here in the capable hands of Vfw Emil Schape as he and his Jasta 33 wingman bear down on a lone SE.5 in September 1918. Schape went on to score an impressive 18 victories, all but one of them with Jasta 33. Only 150 examples of the Roland D.VI found their way to the Jastas, the type being overshadowed by the Fokker D.VII and Pfalz D.XII, but its beautifully shaped planked fuselage made it a robust opponent that was capable of absorbing all the rigours of front line service.

Green Hearts by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Green Hearts by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Situated 40 miles south west of Leningrad, the German occupied airfield at Siverskaya is now home to the famous Grunherz or Green Hearts of Jagdgeschwader 54. The harsh Russian winter of 1941 is starting to take hold as three Messerschmitt Bf109F-4 Friedrichs from III Gruppe take off into early morning sunshine to act as fighter escort to Stuka attacks on the Soviet fleet in Kronstadt Harbour. With its wheel covers removed to prevent snow jamming the undercarriage, lead aircraft Yellow 5 already shows signs of weathering to the partial whitewash hastily applied over summer camouflage.

Ltn. Hans-Ekkehard Bob of JG21 Becomes an Ace by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Ltn. Hans-Ekkehard Bob of JG21 Becomes an Ace by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Major Hans-Ekkehard Bob is shown claiming his 5th victory - a Blenheim - 60km west of Rotterdam on 26th June 1940. Bob went on to serve with JG.54, JG.51, JG.3, EJG2.2 and JV.44, scoring a total of 60 confirmed victories in the course of his Luftwaffe service. The Blenheim claimed as his 5th victory is likely to have been R3776 of No.110 Squadron, which was the only Blenheim recorded to have been lost participating in Operation Soest on that day - while another returned to base damaged and crash landed. The three crew of the Blenheim were all missing in action - P/O Cyril Ray Worboys, Sgt Gerald Patterson Gainsford and Sgt Kenneth Cooper.

Tribute to Sergente Marziale Cerutti by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

All of Italian Ace Marziale Cerutti's WW1 aerial victories were achieved in the Nieuport 27 whilst serving with the 29a Squadriglia, including this Drachen balloon, his 13th victory on 31st June, 1918. His aircraft carried the letters MIR on the rear fuselage, which stood for Marziale Imperatore Romano (Marziale Roman Emperor), plus a stylised playing card emblem. Cerutti ended the war with 17 confirmed victories to his credit and was flying again in WW2, commanding the 14th Air Brigade 'Rex' in Tobruk, scoring another 5 victories.

Tribute to Capitano Carlo Maurizio Ruspoli by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Born in 1906, Carlo Maurizio Ruspoli di Poggio Suasa is recorded as being probably the oldest Italian fighter pilot to become an ace, serving both in the North Africa campaign and on the Russian front, as depicted here, claiming a Polikarpov I.16. He ended the war with a victory total of 10 confirmed aircraft destroyed and died in 1947.

'Dinah Might' Homeward Bound by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Tasked with low level bombing operations at the start of Operation Overlord on 6th June 1944, the B-26 Marauders of the 386th Bomb Group, 553rd Bomb Squadron, carried out their missions with great success, softening up the German defenses to pave the way for the Allied landings along the beaches of northern France. Shown here is one such aircraft, 131576 AN-Z, now on display at the Utah Beach Museum.

Hot Metal - TSR.2 by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Hot Metal - TSR.2 by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Without doubt the most advanced and forward-thinking design for an attack and reconnaissance aircraft in its day, the BAC TSR.2 was to fall victim to the shortsightedness of a misguided Labour government whose entrenched position in the mid 1960s dealt a terrible blow to the British aircraft industry - a blow from which it never fully recovered. Whilst the few TSR.2 airframes that had been constructed languished in outside storage or on gunnery ranges, its intended American replacement, the General Dynamics F.111, was ready for RAF service fully ten years late and at a cost of nearly three times that of a production TSR.2, with the order being cancelled at the last minute. Here, XR219 streaks into the air having ridden the 'hump' in the Boscombe Down runway.

Into the Sun - Leutnant Werner Voss by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The great Werner Voss is depicted in his Fokker F1 103/17 of Jasta 10 in the Summer of 1917. Renowned by pilots from both sides for his bravery and extraordinary airmanship, the young ace scored a total of 48 confirmed victories before being brought down and killed by Lieutenant Rhys Davids' SE5 on the very day that he was due to go on leave. The Fokker F1 differed from the production DR.1 in detail only, Voss' machine being fitted with a captured 110hp Le Rhone engine and his aircraft was not fitted with the outer wing skids common to the DR.1.

Eastern Front Marauder by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Eastern Front Marauder by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Much maligned by its pilots for its cramped cockpit and difficult handling qualities, Henschel's Hs.129 was to prove a useful and potent weapon in the Ground Attack role, especially on the Eastern Front where the Russian Sturmoviks had ably demonstrated the importance of a purpose-built aircraft to fulfil this vital capability. This Hs .129 B-2/R2 is typical of those engaged against the Soviets in 1943, depicted here attacking a pair of T-34 tanks with its potent combination of Mk 101 30mm cannon and four MG17 machine guns. The Infantry Attack badge of the Schlacht units can be seen on the nose.
