HMS Canberra |

HMAS CANBERRA (RAN). Built at John Brown, Clydebank and laid down 9th September 1925, launched 31st May 1927 and completed 10th July 1928. HMAS Canberra served in Australia 1939-1940, South Atlantic and Australia 1940, East Indies 1941, and back to Australia 1942. She was torpedoed by Japanese ships off Savo Island, but was sunk by USN destroyer Ellet. |

Order Code PAN163 HMAS Canberra, along with her sister ship, HMAS Australia, HMAS Canberra were built for the Australian navy. Both ships were of the Kent Class of Cruiser. Both ships were built by John brown Shipbuilders on the Clyde, Scotland. HMAS Canberra was launched on 31st May 1927 and completed on 10th July 1928. During the Battle at Savo island HMAS Canberra was hit by over twenty 8-inch to 4.7-inch shells which completely disabled her and was finally abandoned 5 hours later when she was listing some 30% and with fires which were burning out of control she was eventually scuttled 2 hours later. 9th August 1942. |

HMAS Australia a Kent class cruiser built by John Brown and launched 17th March 1927. Completed 24th April 1928, Australia and her sister ship HMAS Canberra were built for the Australian Navy. They differed from others in the class in having oxygen enriched Mk7 torpedoes and HMAS Australia did not receive catapult with one aircraft until 1935.
