Warrior Class Large Armoured Cruisers First Class. of the Royal navy. The class consisted of HMS Achilles, HMS Cochrane, HMS Natal and HMS Warrior. This class of Cruiser built in 1905 was a modified Duke of Edinburgh Class. They were built as part of the 1903 - 1904 Naval Building programme.

HMS Achilles 17th June 1905 Sold and broken up 9th May 1921.
HMS Cochrane 20th May 1905 Wrecked 14th November 1918.
HMS Natal 30th September 1905 Blew up 30th December 1915.
HMS Warrior 25th November 1905 Damaged by gunfire and foundered during towing 1st June 1916.

HMS Achilles. 

Built by Armstrong  at Elswick laid down on the 22nd February 1904 and launched 17th June 1905. completed in June 1907.   Joined the 5th Cruiser Squadron of the Home Fleet 1907. and sailed to the Baltic as part of the  official visit to Russia in 1908. In 1909 went to Portsmouth to join the 3rd Fleet and she missed taking part in the battle of Jutland due to repairs being done after a gun explosion onboard in November 1914.  On the 16th march 1917, with the boarding steamer HMS Dundee sank the German surface raider Leopard.  Continued on escort duties until 1918. but was reduced to a training ship for stokers before the end of the war. Put on the sale list 1920 and sold for scrapping in 1921.

HMS Cochrane  

Built at Govan by Fairfield launched on 20th May 1905 and completed in February 1907. She joined the 5th Squadron  at the Nore in 1907 and transferred to the 2nd Cruiser squadron in 1909. In 1911 - 1912 her duties were to escort the Royal Yacht Medina. On the outbreak of World war One joined the Grand Fleet at Scapa Flow and took part in the battle of Jutland. In 1917 the North American and west Indies Station then to Archangel in May 19918 until September the same year. On her return she ran aground in the Mersey on the 14th November 1918 and was a total loss. She was finally demolished by June 1919.

Officers and Visitors, HMS Natal 1907.

Postcard sent from Sheerness, early December 1907.  It is conceivable, if unlikely, that at least some of these guests may be from the Peruvian cruiser Almirante Grau, shown alongside HMS Natal in one of the photos above dated 1907.

HMS Natal.   Built at Barrow by Vickers and Launched on the 25th November 1905 finally completed on the 5th March 1907. Like her sister ships she joined the 5th Cruiser Squadron. in 1907  until transferring to the 2nd cruiser Squadron in 1909. Escorted the Royal yacht Medina in 1911 to 1912. She also had the duty to Carry the Body of the the US Ambassador to Great Britain, Whitelaw Reid back to New York. At the outbreak of war she joined the Grand Fleet and in January 1915 was refitted at Cromarty. It was at Cromorty on the 31st December 1915 due to Faulty Cordite which caused an Internal Explosion which destroyed the cruiser with 404  lives lost. (out of a crew of just over 700 ).

HMS Warrior   

Built at Pembroke Dockyard and launched on the 25th of November 1905 and completed on the 12th of December 1906.  joined the 5th Cruiser squadron on Completion transferring to the 2nd cruiser squadron in 1909 until 1913. Went to the Mediterranean Fleet in 1913 to join the 1st cruiser squadron until August 1914 when she was sent to the Adriatic to help prevent the break out of the Goeben the German battle cruiser.  Returned to Egypt to defend the Suez Canal. HMS Warrior went to Gibraltar and Sierra Leon before joining the Grand Fleet in December 1914.  Took part in the Battle of Jutland and was badly damaged by German gunfire.  She was so badly damaged that she was taken in tow by HMS Engadine (seaplane Tender ) on the 31st May but foundered and sank on the 1st of June 1916.
