Hi, attached is a picture of a matchbox barrel and ashtray (above).  Each has a small plaque stating that it was made from the teak of HMS Valiant. From your site it was probably made in either Durban or Scotland when she was finally broken up.

FREDERICK WALTER DIXON.. My Father Frederick Walter Dixon served on the HMS Valiant and HMS Malaya during the war as a Leading Seaman.   I would like to hear from anyone who remembers him and in particular if anybody knows anything about the accident which cost him his life in Portsmouth Harbour on the 2nd June 1947 as my mother was never given any details as to what happened apart from the fact that the launch was in collision with a boat.    His body was found three weeks later washed ashore on Thorney Island.   E-Mail me at Tinabeard@aol.com

ADMIRAL WGC MAXWELL  I am trying to find out information about Admiral WGC Maxwell who I believe was the Captain of the Valiant at some time. If there is anyone out there who can help me please E-mail.   Lesley Brunink   contact here

My Grandad started out as a stoker on HMS Valiant served up to 1943 promoted to petty officer,  Lived in Warrington had a wife Gladys Delooze and son John . has anyone any information regarding his service record? delooze@manx.net

ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET LORD LEWIN...... My father was Terry Lewin, ultimately he became Admiral of the Fleet Lord Lewin whose last appointment was as Chief of the Defence Staff at the time of the Falklands conflict. He died in January 1999 after which I passed the major part of his "important effects" to the National Maritime Museum (where he had also acted as head of the trustees). His life has been well covered in Richard Hill's authorised biography "Lewin of Greenwich" which is still in print and a good read. Now I am collating other materials about him and would particularly like to hear from all and any former colleagues, ship's companies, national servicemen, anyone, with stories, memories and recollections about him. I am particularly interested in sea jobs (but anything is welcome) which in order from 1939 were;-  Belfast, Valliant, Ashanti, Chequers, Corunna, HMY Britannia, Urchin, Tenby, Hermes.  I am aware that unless I collect these stories now they will soon be lost so please, all of you, try to remember something!            Many thanks, Tim Lewin                                        tim.lewin@btinternet.com

ERIC WILLIAM CROWCOMBE..  Since a small boy my father told me stories of his time in the navey so i have always been interested in the ships he served on, he has now sadly passed away.  In the war years he served on H.M.S Valiant as I believe head of a pom pom gunner team (chicargo piano) as they called it based near Valiants funnel. I have many photographs of crew members, pictures of crossing the line celebrations, admirals joining the fleet plus pictures of valiant, tricomalee etc.   If any one remembers my father his name was ERIC WILLIAM CROWCOMBE and would like to email me Dougie on dntsales@bargain100.fsnet.co.uk  I would be glad to hear from you.

BERNARD FULLER (BUNNY).. My father, Bernard, served aboard the Valiant in 1943-1945. If anyone knows him please get in touch at pam@eclipseit.demon.co.uk (posted 19/05/03)

LESLIE PHILLIPS.. My father in law Les served on Valiant as a Yeoman Signalman whilst in Alexandria during WW2. Les recalls seeing the U boat which sank Barham surface and come about in front of Valiant with the bridge officer ordering to ram the u boat. He was seconded to the USS Alabama as liaison staff prior to the Korean War. If anyone remembers Les or has information about ship association sites contact us at posidon3289@martinabbott.fsworld.co.uk

The Pacific Fleet comprised of Battleships HMS Valiant, Queen Elizabeth, renown and Aircraft carriers Unicorn and Illustrious. We spent all out time bombarding Japanese positions. I received the Pacific and Burma Star and of Course the 1939 - 1945 and defence medal. Sadly the Valiant was damaged due to a fault with the Floating Dock. We were transferred to HMS Resource which was a submarine repair ship and the Valiant was sent back to Britain. Once while passing Burma we saw 5 of the Queen's Royal Rifles, they were the only five that got through Jap lines and were on the beach in Burma. we stopped and sent a picket boat to pick them up. I was with them for five weeks in a rest camp in Hong Kong. I would love to see any of the lads again. My best Mate was Dennis Clark (address unknown) He is shown in the photo with me (below right).    You can contact me at   at   George@cottrell342.fsworld.co.uk
