Order Code PHX331 We understand this ship was involved in the transport of around 2,000 Jews to Sydney, Australia from Britain, arriving in October 1940. The original card of the photo above has on the reverse dates of a voyage. These are as follows. Left Southampton September 7th, passed Gibraltar September 11th, Port Said September 17th, Aden September 22nd, Colombo September 28th. We are not sure whether these are from the famous voyage or not, but it seems possible. We would like to add a detailed page about the history of this ship. Crew member from HMS Balmoral Castle. From what we can gather, HMS Balmoral Castle was an ex-Union Castle Line ship, specially taken over by the Admiralty to transport the Prince of Wales to South Africa to open the country's new Parliament in 1910. However, prior to the ship leaving on its errand, the Prince of Wales became King George V on the death of King Edward VII, leaving the Duke of Connaught to sail aboard HMS Balmoral Castle to perform the ceremony. Also used as a troop ship during the first world war, landing troops in Gallipoli. A reproduction of this original photo / photo-postcard size 10" x 7" approx available.
