SPANISH NAVY |
In the middle of the nineteenth century
Spain had a reasonably sized navy to protect its overseas colonies. Spain
was one of a few smaller navies who built broadside ironclads,, mostly
being converted form older wooden frigates,. The Spanish navy was involved
in the 1864 to 1866 war against Peru and Chile and also another major
event was the 1968 Cadiz Mutiny. In 1898 the USS Maine blew up
in Havana Harbour, although not sabotaged by the Spanish, this incident
gave the American the cause to declare
war on Spain and Cuba. During the
Battle of
Manila Bay and Santiago the Spanish navy was nearly entirely
destroyed. This loss of sea power ultimately played its part in the
loss of the Spanish Colonies, including The Philippines and Cuba. After
this crushing defeat there was no, enthusiasm to re build a strong Navy.
and even the ships in the process of building were delayed before being
completed.
