SMS Roon, The German heavy or protected
Cruiser of the Roon Class. Very similar tot the Prinz
Adalbert class of cruiser except that Roon and
Yorck had four funnels instead of three. SMS Roon was
built at Kiel Dockyard and laid down in 1902 launched 27th June 1903 and
completed 5th April 1906. Served in the opening years of world war
one, but was retired from active fleet service in 1916 and
disarmed. It was intended to convert her into a seaplane carrier
with an armament of six 5.9 inch and Six 3.4 inch guns plus 4 seaplanes.
but this idea was scrapped and she served as a guard ship and accommodation
ship at Kiel finally after the war she was scrapped in 1921.
Displacement: 9,350 tons to 10,104
tons speed 21knots. fired by both coal and oil. Compliment 633
Armament: Four 210mm (8.2 inch) Guns (2x2), Ten 150mm (5.9-inch) Twelve
88mm,(3.4-inch) Four machine guns and Four 450mm Torpedo Tubes. (all
submerged)
