Japanese naval history of the battleships Settsu and Kawachi. These Japanese battleships launched before the outbreak of world war one, Settsu in March 1911 and Kawachi in March 1910. The Kawachi blew up after a magazine explosion on the 12 July 1918 with the loss of 700. The Settsu had to be scrapped under the Washington agreement but she was used during world war II.

Settsu was built at the Kure navy yard and launched on the 30th March 1911 and completed on the 1st July 1912. and was disarmed as part of the Washington treaty. but was armoured as a light armoured target ship. She was converted to a radio control target. (its control ship was the destroyer Yukaze. But in 1940 she was re-boilered and new engines installed her funnels were modified and she was used to train carrier pilots. she was sunk in shallow water by American aircraft from Task Force 38 on the 24th July 1945. She was salvaged and broken up at Harima.

Kawachi was built by Yokosuka Navy Yard and launched on the 15th October 1910 and completed on the 31st March 1912. The Kawachi blew up after a magazine explosion on the 12 July 1918 with the loss of 700

Displacement:  Settsu 21,443 tons  and Kawachi 20,823 tons.  Crew 986.  Speed: 20 Knots  Range: 2700 nm at 18 Knots. Armament: Four 12-inch guns, Eight 12-inch Guns  Ten 6 -inch guns   Eight 4.7 inch guns.  Twelve 3.1 inch guns  Fou r3.1 inch/28 calibre guns   and Five 18-inch Torpedo Tubes.

Settsu 30th March 1911 Sunk in shallow water by American aircraft from Task Force 38 on the 24th July 1945. She was salvaged and broken up at Harima
Kawachi 15th October 1910 Sank after a magazine explosion on 12th July 1918. 700 crew lost.
