Battle cruiser histories. Royal naval battle cruiser HMS Renown. Battle cruiser website dedicated to the history of HMS Renown from their launch to their participation in major wars also notice board for families of ex-crew of HMS Renown.

HMS Renown was a Battle cruiser built at Fairfield and re engined at Cammell Laird. she was launched on the 4th march 1916. Between the wars HMS Renown has a major refit at Portsmouth in May 1923 to August 1926. She had her belt armour increased, (using the plate armour intended for the Chilean battleship Almirante Cochrane). Her horizontal armour was increased from 1-inch to 1.5 inch.

HMS Renown served in all major theatres during world war two. During September 1939 she served in the north sea and during October 1939 took part in the search for the German surface raiders Admiral Graf Spee and Deutschland. During August 1940 the renown exchanged fire with the German Battle Cruisers Gneisenau and Scharnhorst  but only received slight damage. During the rest of 1940and 1941  HMS Renown served with Force H. Renown also took part in the pursuit of the Bismarck, during May 1941. During November 1942 she supported the Allied Landing in North Africa.  During early 1944 HMS Renown joined the British eastern Fleet supporting the carrier raids, and also the bombarding of Surabaya.  At Durban she had a refit and then returned to home water in March 1945.  Due to her poor condition HMS renown was put into reserve and was finally scrapped at Faslane, Scotland on August 1948. (Above left photograph is of Renown in the lock at the Panama Canal).

The ship in this photo has been identified as HMS Renown by Pieter Cornelissen:  The picture you are showing on your website shows a ship with two funnels and with triple mounting of 4" guns very high on the forward superstructure. Courageoues class cruisers had only one funnel and the 4" triples lower on the ship. Renown class battlecruisers did have two funnels and 4" guns high on the forward superstructure. This leaves the question of which ship, Renown or Repulse. According to Siegfried Breyer Repulse had her searchlight platforms high on different levels on  the after funnel, Renown had her searchlight platforms  low and at the same level. So the ship in your picture is probably Renown                          Photo

MESSAGES

RONALD (WILLIAM/BILL) BUCKINGHAM..  My late father, a native of Exeter, served on HMS Renown during WWII.  He was a stoker and was also on the lighter boats.  He joined late 1940's at Rosyth as a very young 17 year old, and went onto the Far East, incl Ceylon and then Durban, hospitalised there with TB for a while.  Anyone remember him?  I have photos of him and shipmates which I will send to others on the notice board too.  Ian Buckingham.  Contact Here

RICHARD 'DICK' WESTCOTT..  My father Richard 'Dick' Westcott served on the HMS Renown as a radio operator during WWII.  I wonder if anyone remembers him.  I would love to hear from them.  Dad is still living, but in very poor health. Contact here

ARTHUR FREDERICK CARR..  My uncle served aboard the Renown during wwII.  I wondered if anybody remembered him or had any messages I could pass on with a view to either getting in contact direct or maybe a meeting.  His name was Arthur Frederick Carr.  My name is Mick Taylor and my email address is mickfury69@ntlworld.com

ERIC HODGKINSON..  (83 years young).  My Dad served on HMS Renown.  He was a gunner and ships photographer, he would be delighted to hear from any surviving crew members.  Contact here

KEN STOKES... My father served on HMS Renown during and after WW2.  His name is Ken Stokes.  He talks with fond memories of this ship and colleagues.  Malta - "The Gut" features many times in his stories.  Reading other entries, I see that many look for photos.  For my dad's 70th (he will be 80 in June), I surprised him with many photos I obtained.  One in particular is proudly displayed in his home. Advice - seek to find your pictures from the Imperial War Museum - they have a vast selection.  The one referred to earlier shows the Renown entering Valetta Harbour with the ships company on deck.  Does anyone remember my dad - taller than most on the ship at 6ft 4".  I think his nickname was Lofty.  He served in the engine room.

VICTOR F HOLMES.... My late father Victor F. Holmes served on H.M.S.Renown from 1939 - 1944 as a Stoker class 1, does anyone remember him, I am information I would be very grateful. contact edward.e.holmes@talk21.com

LT I H MACDONALD..  I have two very good water-colours of the Barham and the Renown. In the bottom right hand corner are the initials I.H.M. There was a Lt I H Mcdonald who survived the sinking of the Barham and I wonder if he served on the Renown. I would like to research this talented artist.  Michael Howroyd  HOWROYDMK@aol.com

ALBERT DAVIES.. I am trying to find out any info on my father, Albert Edward Davies, who was a stoker on the Renown between 1941-1945. Photos of the crew would be a great help. Contact me at albert.williams@ntlworld.com

JIM FRENCH.. My uncle Jim served on HMS Renown while she was at the River Plate engagement with the Graf Spee. Anyone with stories or photos of him on Renown please contact me at decpey@hotmail.com

J C WARREN.. My dad, Martin John Cain, served on the Renown and he gave some pictures and text notes for the book Hit Hard Hit First. I have a poem that was written by an a/b J C Warren who was with my dad at the time and I would love to be able to contact him or his family to pass it on. Contact me at garycain134@msn.com

LEN CROCOMBE.. My father Len Crocombe served on Renown in the 1940's. He died last week and I would love to hear from anyone who knew him. Also does anyone know of past Renown crew members contracting lung cancer? Contact Linda at crokey@zoom.co.uk

ERIC JOSLIN... Are there any old sailors out there who served on HMS Renown during her refit at Durban in January 1945? The Renown's log entry for 13th January 1945 states: 0945 Colours Half-Masted for funeral of the late AB Joslin. Eric Joslin was my uncle. His death, aged 19 years, has always been a mystery to his family. There is nothing in Renown's log about an accident. Can anyone throw any light on the nature of Eric's death? If so please contact Julie at pj.burville@btinternet.com
