HMS Medway. Built as a depot Ship for Submarines and designed to tend 18 submarines of the O and P class's this number rising to 21 during world war two. Built by Vickers Armstrong at Barrow and launched 19th July 1928. Displacement: 14650 tons, Speed 15 knots, Compliment: 400, Armament: Two 4 -inch Guns and Four 4-inch AA Guns.  Served as depot Ship China 1939 then went to the Mediterranean 1940 and just off Alexandria was sunk by 2 or three torpedo's from U372. on the 30th June 1942

My Dad served in the navy during WW2 and amongst his photo's was this one. The caption on the back is "This is the Medway and a flotilla of submarines". Kindly sent in by Margie Minogue

HMS Medway, submarine depot ship launched in 1928. Built by Vickers Armstrong at Barrow, as a submarine supply ship she carried 144 21inch torpedoes and four 4 inch mk4 guns, two of which were mounted for her own defence. She was built to tend 18 submarines of the O and P class. HMS Medway was sunk by 2/3 torpedoes from U372 on 30th June 1942. She had a complement of 400.

FREDERICK OWEN MANNING..  My Father Sick Berth C.P.O. Frederick Owen Manning served on The Cyclops and The Medway when she was torpedoed off Alex. HMS Medway by Ivan Berryman

HMS Medway was the first Royal navy submarine Depot ship that was designed for the purpose from the outset. She is shown here with a quintet of T-class submarines on her starboard side, whilst an elderly L-Class begins to move away having completed replenishment. HMS Medway was sunk on 30th June 1940 having been torpedoed by U-372 off Alexandria.
