HMS Northampton.  Sent in by Carl Proctor

Probably HMS Northampton but possibly HMS Nelson

Message received by email : Hello. We're attempting to identify the 19th century warship in this old photo. Any help or suggestions you might be able to offer would be most appreciated. Best wishes, Aubrey Bell (& Patricia Bennett), Charlottetown, PEI, Canada.

This is a British armoured cruiser of the Nelson-class. The ships
were painted white on foreign stations. HMS Nelson served on the Australian Station from 1881 until 1889. The other ship of the class was HMS Northampton, flagship of the North American/ West Indies Station until 1886. So if the picture had been taken in North America the unknown ship should be HMS Northampton.

Identified by Frank Kohlmann

Officers of HMS Northampton, c.1880.

John Fisher was Flag Captain of HMS Northampton from September 1879 to January 1881.   Back row, left to right; Younghusband, Montgomery, Equiton?, Prettyman, Van Riddle.   Front row, left to right; Fawkes, Fisher, Pae?

HMS Northampton - Torpedo.

From the sources we have, HMS Northampton did not have any torpedoes until 1886.  However, the photo album from which this photo came had photos only from c.1880, none later than 1881.  So either this is an early photo with a torpedo shown which has been missed by our sources, or it is a photo from 1886 showing a new torpedo, the rails and machinery was probably taken to show off the new equipment.
