Developed from the F.18E/F Block II Super Hornet, the EA-18G Growler is the US Navy's latest airborne electronic attack aircraft (AEA), a land or carrier-based weapons platform into which many flexible design features have been incorporated, giving it a full-spectrum AEA capability as well as targeting and self-defense systems equal to those of the standard F.18. Sometimes referred to as a 'Grizzly' to avoid confusion with its predecessor, the EA-6B Prowler, the EA-18G was first introduced into Navy service in 2008 with VAQ-129, one of whose aircraft is depicted here above the carrier USS Ronald Raegan (CVN.76).

At Dawn on 9th March 1862, as the American Civil War raged on, an extraordinary combat took place in Hampton Roads, a naval exchange that was to herald a new age and completely change the concept and design of modern warships. Having already destroyed the two Federal warships <i>Cumberland</i> and <i>Congress</i> the previous day, the Confederate ironclad <i>CSS Virginia</i> readied herself for another day's work, her target this time being the grounded <i>Minnesota</i>. As the <i>Virginia</i> approached her target, she was confronted by the much smaller Union ironclad <i>Monitor</i> which had just arrived after a fraught journey from New York. Thus began an exchange of fire that lasted more than three hours, each ship's shot merely bouncing and deflecting off its opponent without inflicting any serious damage. With her smokestack shot away, the <i>Virginia</i> now concentrated her shot on the <i>Monitor'</i>s tiny wheelhouse where a direct hit blinded the Union ship's commander, necessitating a temporary withdrawal. By the time <i>Monitor</i> was ready to re-engage, the <i>Virginia</i> was limping away, the result of this fierce encounter being nothing more than stalemate. Neither ship could claim any form of victory and neither had sustained any meaningful damage. Though clumsy and difficult to handle, the thick iron plating and low profiles of these very different vessels signaled a direction in warship design that lasted until the Second World War, eighty years later.

Battle of the Ironclads by Ivan Berryman.		 On 2nd June 1942 U-652 was scuttled after sustaining heavy damage from an attack by Swordfish aircraft. All the crew of the submarine were safe as she was sunk by torpedoes from U-81.

Protecting the troops from marauding u-boats and German surface ships was of paramount importance to the allied fleets. Although USS New York spent a good deal of the war in the Atlantic, she also participated in the Torch landings off North Africa and took part in the Pacific campaign, seeing action at both Iwo Jima and Okinowa.

On 17th June 1944, 780 miles west of Saipan in Mid Pacific, the Gato class submarine USS Cavalla dives after a lucky sighting of a Japanese Naval Task Force, which included the aircraft carriers Taiho, Shokaku and Zuikaku. The Cavalla then trailed the Japanese, attacking and sinking the Shokaku on the 19th.

Our signed naval prints give our customers an almost direct link to history.  Many of our naval prints are signed by the crewmen who were on the ship depicted at the time depicted.  Their signature is a valuable bonus for print collectors.  At the same time it is great for us to take our prints to these men and women to be signed - We are very grateful that they have allowed us to do so on many occasions.  In recent years we have especially concentrated on German naval signatures, an area that has now grown to a sizeable collection.  The photo above shows former Tirpitz crewman Erich Brammen signing a print depicting Tirpitz in Kiel canal.

Half Price! - £40.00 		When the RAF took delivery of their first Consolidated B.24 Liberators in 1941, aerial cover for trans-Atlantic convoys was strengthened, affording these brave merchant ships a modicum of protection as they forged their slow passage from the US to Britain with vital supplies. 120 Sqn was immediately pressed into this role from their initial base at Nutts Corner in Northern Ireland, before moving to Ballykelly and Reykjavik in Iceland as the U-Boat threat increased. The example shown is a Liberator V of RAF Coastal Command.

Half Price! - £75.00 		The E-class light cruiser HMS Emerald is shown off the Newfoundland coast in company with a Flower class corvette. Between October 1939 and August 1940, HMS Emerald carried £58 million in gold from Britain to Canada.

Half Price! - £15.00 		One of the finest battleships of all time, Bismarck was built by the Blohm and Voss shipyard in Hamburg and launched in February 1939. Her first duty was for commerce raiding in the north Atlantic. Together with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, the destroyers Z10, Z16 and Z23 and a minesweeper. The Bismarck, commanded by Vice Admiral Gunther Lutjens, left her last anchorage at Grimstadt Fjord in Norway. Once Bismarcks departure was confirmed all available British forces were deployed to meet the threat. On the 24th of May 1941 the Bismarck sailed into naval history - sinking the battlescruiser and pride of the British fleet - HMS Hood. But Bismarck would have little time to celebrate, she was sunk by a scorned British fleet three days later. Here Bismarck is depicted on the evening of the 21st May 1941 entering the open sea on her fateful final voyage.

Half Price! - £50.00 		The mighty Bismarck returns fire to the fast-approaching HMS Hood at the start of a battle that would see both adversaries tragically sunk. The Bismarck would later be attacked by Swordfish aircraft from HMS Ark Royal, damaging her stearing and allowing her to be caught by the British battleships Rodney and King George V. The once proud German battleship would be ruthlessly pounded into a twisted and burning wreck and finally finished by HMS Dorsetshire with torpedoes at around 10:30 hours on the morning of May 27th 1941. HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Maori combed the area of the sinking for survivors, between them picking up a total of 110 out of an original complement of 2,300.

Half Price! - £27.50 		Depicts Dr. William Brydon, an assistant surgeon in the Bengal Army arriving at the gates of Jellabad on his exhausted and dying horse. He was thought to be the sole survivor of some 16,000 strong army and followers from Kabul, which was forced to retreat the 90 miles over snow covered passes to Jellabad during the first Aghan war. A few others eventually struggled through to the fort.

Half Price! - £30.00 		On 27th November 1950, thousands of Chinese troops swarmed over the frozen Yalu river on the North Korean /Chinese border, cutting off US Marines in the Chosin Reservoir area. Over the next ten days the marines with air support from both the Navy and Marine Air Wings fought their way out of the trap to Hungnam and safety.

Themistocles had chosen the narrow waters at the entrance to the bay well. The Persians could not bring their larger fleet to bear on the smaller Greek fleet and due to the design and manoeuverability of the Greek Triremes, the Greek fleet sailed down the right channel next to Salamis and turned to ram the Persian fleet as it entered the bay. The Persian captains tried frantically to turn their ships but their oars became entangled and the turning manoeuvre caused the ships to run into each other. The Greek Triremes were able to ram the leading Persian ships, disengage and ram again. This was a great victory for Themistocles who lost only 70 ships from his fleet of 380 Triremes, compared to the loss of over 600 ships from the Persian fleet of over 1,000.

Half Price! - £25.00 		This incident took place on October 23rd,1914. A party of German soldiers had been driven to take shelter in the small house. British artillery then targeted the house, making the situation of the Germans uncomfortable. Under cover of the bombardment, a company of Cameron Highlanders rushed the position, intercepting the Germans as they tried to extricate themselves. After a brief struggle, and being somewhat unnerved by the prompt appearance of the Highlanders; the German group surrendered.

Half Price! - £50.00 		England 1 Germany 0, Euro 2000. On the 17th of June 2000 England once again faced their old nemesis Germany in a Group A qualifying match at Euro 2000. England entered the game knowing that they had not defeated Germany in a competitive match since the famous World Cup victory in 1966. Germany made four changes to the side that had drawn with Romania including the introduction of midfielder Sebastian Deisler, whilst England had been forced to replace Tony Adams and Steve McManaman with Martin Keown and Dennis Wise due to injury. As expected the game started at a frenetic pace and Jancker made things difficult for England's central defenders early on with his height and strength. England appeared to be lacking cohesion and allowed Germany to take control of the game. Deisler brought the German crowd to their feet with a clever run down the right hand side and minutes later Hamaan had their first strike on goal which was hit directly at David Seaman. England were looking for a flash of inspiration and it was very nearly delivered as Michael Owen managed to meet Phil Neville's cross with his head but only managed to direct the ball on to the post. Paul Scholes in typical fashion drove a ferocious volley, which was tipped just over the bar, and suddenly it appeared that England were beginning to find some weaknesses in certain areas of the German side. At the interval little separated the two sides however, England started the second half with a steely determination. After just seven minutes David Beckham earned his side a free kick in a very dangerous position on the England right. With good movement from the forwards in the German area Beckham swung a speculative cross into the six yard box. Owen, beaten by the pace, failed to connect but man of the match Alan Shearer anticipated the kind bounce and without hesitation headed the ball back across Kahn and into the right hand side of the German goal. The England captain had broken the deadlock and instilled in his side the belief that they could finally defeat their oldest rivals. Germany threw everything they had at England but Keegan's team were equal to the task in every area of the pitch. As the final whistle blew a huge roar erupted from the England supporters as Alan Shearer's goal had ended over thirty years of frustration and sealed his place in the history books as one of England's greatest ever strikers.
