Quadra

Name Origin: Don Juan de la Bodega y Quadra, one of the three leaders of an expedition sent by Spain from San Blas in Mexico.  In 1775, Quadra discovered the mouth of the Columbia River and explored the coast generally.

The first Quadra was a survey ship, launched 4th July 1966 and sold October 1982.

Quadrant

The first Quadrant was a Q Class destroyer launched 28th February 1942.  Transferred to Australia October 1945.  Reclassified as frigate 1954.  Sold 7th January 1963.

Quadrille

The first Quadrille was a Dance Class minesweeper, acquired from the War Office in October 1917, and sold in May 1920.

**Another minor vessel shares this name, and is listed as an anti submarine trawler, launched 15th March 1941 and sold 6th June 1946.

Quail

Four before 1860.

The fifth Quail was as Quail Class destroyer, launched 24th September 1895.  Sold 23rd July 1919.

The sixth Quail was a Q Class destroyer, launched 1st June 1942.  Mined 15th November 1943 and sunk under tow 18th June 1944.

**Other minor vessels share this name, and are listed as:  Quail II, a Trawler hired 1914 - 1916, and Quail III, a Trawler hired in 1915, sunk in collision 23rd June 1915.

Quainton

The first Quainton was a Ton Class Minesweeper launched 10th October 1957.  Renamed Northumbria from April 1960 to 1972 before reverting to Quainton.  Scrapped August 1979.

One before 1860.

Qualicum

The first Qualicum was a Canadian Bangor Class minesweeper, launched 3rd September 1941, scrapped in June 1949 at Rosyth.

Quality

The first Quality was a Q Class Destroyer, launched 6th October 1941.  Transferred to Australia in 1945.  Scrapped 10th April 1958.

Quangtung

The first Quangtung was an Iron paddle vessel launched in 1863.

Quantock

The first HMS Quantock was a Hunt Class (Type I) destroyer, launched 22nd April 1940.  Transferred to Ecaudor 1954, being renamed Presidente Alfaro.  Sold 1978.

Quappelle

The first Quappelle was a Mackenzie Class Escort Destroyer launched 2nd May 1960.  Sold 31st July 1992.

Quatsino

The first Quatsino was a Canadian Bangor Class  minesweeper, launched 9th January 1941.  Became merchant ship Concord in 1950, and renamed again in 1950 as Chen Hsin.

Quebec

Two British before 1860.

The third (Canadian) Quebec was a Flower Class corvette launched 12th November 1941 and renamed Ville de Quebec in 1942.  Sold 1947.

Queen

Name Origin: In the autumn of 1900 it was decided to revive this ancient ship name in honour of HM Queen Victoria, who had just completed the 63rd year of her long reign.  The battleship destined to bear this name was, however, not laid down until two months after the great Queen had passed away, on January 22nd 1901.  Oldest ship name in the navy list (1232).

Four before 1860.

The fifth Queen was a London Class Battleship launched 8th March 1902.  Sold 4th November 1920, and broken up from August 1921.

The sixth Queen was a Ruler Class Escort Aircraft Carrier, acquired through lend lease 31st July 1943.  Ex USS St Andrews, returned to America 31st October 1946.

Three before 1860.

Queen Elizabeth

The first Queen Elizabeth was a Queen Elizabeth Class battleship launched 16th October 1913.  Broken up at Dalmuir, 1948.

Queen Mab

One before 1860.

Queen Mary

The first Queen Mary was a Queen Mary (or Third Lion) Class battleship, launched 20th March 1912.  Sunk during the Battle of Jutland, 31st May 1916.

Queenborough

Two before 1860.

The third Queenborough was a Q Class destroyer launched 16th January 1942.  Transferred to Australia October 1945.  Reclassified as frigate 1954.  Scrapped April 1975.

Quentin

The first Quentin was a Q Class destroyer launched 5th November 1941.  Sunk 2nd December 1942.

Quesnel

The first Quesnel was a Canadian Flower Class corvette, launched 12th November 1940.  Scrapped 1946.

Quest

The first Quest is a Survey Vessel, launched 9th July 1968.

**Other minor vessels also had this name, and are listed as; Trawler hired 1917 - 1919; and Norwegian Whaler hired November 1940, becoming a water carrier 1943 - October 1945.

Quiberon

The first Quiberon was a Q Class destroyer, launched 31st January 1942.  Transferred to Australia July 1942.  Reclassified as a frigate July 1957.  Sold for breaking 15th February 1972.

Quickmatch

The first Quickmatch was a Q Class destroyer launched 11th April 1942.  Transferred to Australia September 1942.  Reclassified as frigate September 1955.  Scrapped July 1972.

Quidora

Name Origin: One of the Auracanian heroines, wives of the Caciques, who fought the Spanish invaders.  They figure in a poem called La Auracana by Don Alonso de Ercilla.

Quilliam

The first Quilliam was a Q Class destroyer launched 29th November 1941.  Transferred to Netherlands November 1945, renamed Banckert.  Scrapped 8th February 1957.

Quinte

The first Quinte was a Bangor Class minesweeper launched 8th March 1941.  Sold August 1947 for breaking.

The second Quinte was a Bay Class minesweeper launched 8th August 1953.  Sold 1966.

Quiros

Name Origin: Don Teodor de Quiros, called Teodoro de la Madre de Dios, a Dominican monk; born 1599, died 1662.  He was for many years Commissioner General of the Holy Inquisition in the Philippines, and worked as a missionary amongst the natives of the island of Formosa.  He was the author of various religious works, and compiled a grammar and dictionary of the Tagalos language..

One before 1860

Quorn

The first Quorn was a Hunt Class minesweeper launched 4th June 1917.  Sold for scrapping 18th September 1922.

The second Quorn was a Hunt Class (Type I) destroyer, launched 27th March 1940.  Sunk 3rd August 1944 by an explosive motor boat.

The third Quorn is a Hunt Class minehunter, launched 23rd January 1988.

Queen Empress - Paddle Minesweeper hired 25th October 1915 - 30th June 1920 and 27th October 1939.  Became anti aircraft ship 1942. Returned September 1945.

Queen Mother - Drifter hired 1916 - 1919.

Queen of Bermuda - Hired as Armed Merchant Cruiser 30th August 1939 - April 1943.

Queen of Kent - Paddle Minesweeper hired 12th September 1939 - 1945 (ex-HMS Atherstone).

Queen of Thanet - Paddle Minesweeper hired 12th September 1939.  Became accommodation ship January 1944 and salvage vessel 1945 - 7th June 1946 (ex - HMS Melton).

Queen of the Fleet - Drifter hired 1917 - 1919 and as accommodation ship April 1940 and mine recovery March 1945 - November 1945.

Queen of the May - Pilot hired August 1943 - December 1945.

Queen of the North - Paddle Minesweeper hired 29th March 1916.  Mined 20th July 1917.

Queen of the Usk - Tug hired for harbour duties 20th January 1918 - 1919.

Queensville - Tug hired 1944.

Queen Victoria - Hired Netlayer 28th January 1915, purchased August 1915.  Scrapped 12th May 1920.

Queenworth - Hired Minesweeper 13th February 1940, purchased 17th May 1940.  Sunk 9th May 1941.

Quencher - Hired Water Boat June 1918 - April 1919.

Quentin Roosevelt - French Fishery Protection Vessel seized 3rd July 1940.  Became anti submarine vessel 1940 and training ship January 1943 - June 1945.

Quercia - Trawler hired 1915 - 1919, and again as fuel carrier August 1942 and as water boat March 1944 - 1946.

Quernmore - Hired Escort 29th June 1917.  Sunk 31st July 1917 by U-boat.

Quester - Tug hired for harbour duties February 1918 - February 1919.

Quetta - Indian Bassett Class Trawler

Quickly - Trawler hired as decoy ship (Q32) July 1915 to 1918.

Quicksand - Admiralty Drifter launched 1918.  Sold 1921.
