Armed merchant cruisers. The
US Navy purchased a number of merchant ships and armed them to become
armed merchant cruisers. The first and most important at the turn
of the century were four fast liners owned by the International
Navigation Company; St Louis, St Paul, Harvard and Yale. These
armed merchant cruisers were commissioned into the navy during the
Spanish - American war and returned back to the International
Navigation Company in september 1898 |

in WWI. Capsized in North River, New York, 28th April 1918.
Raised and later sold in 1923. |
