Royal Navy during the 19th and 20th century. Rare photographs taken of
Royal Naval ships in Valetta harbour supplied by ex-crew and naval
enthusiasts and contributors to this website. The
British naval base at Valetta, Malta. The first dry Dock was built in
1848, followed by another in 1871. Based in Malta was a dockyard, Supply
Depot and a Arsenal. and by 1900 a total of four dry-docks were built. ,Malta
was a great strategic Base and proved its worth during World war One But
between the wars the base was not as busy But again During world war two
due to its central position in the Mediterranean was a major factor for
its intense bombing by the Axis forces. But By the end of the war it
became a major base for the preparation and invasion of Sicily. Malta
dockyard was closed in 1958. But the docks are now owned by the Malta Dry-docks
and The Malta Shipbuilding Co Ltd which is primarily used for repair of Civilian

Malta, c.1899: Three Royal Sovereign Class British Battleships and
a Majestic Class Battleship.
From our sources, we think these are most likely - although not
certain - to be HMS Royal Sovereign, HMS Royal Oak, HMS Ramillies and
HMS Caesar.

Malta about 1900.
Two Royal Sovereign Class British battleships (foreground and far
right) with another unknown ship. It does look like it is flying
either the French or Italian flag but not entirely certain. Points
to note on it are the strange stern and the crane between the two
funnels.
