Battleship histories. Royal naval battleship HMS Malaya. Battleship website dedicated to the history of HMS Malaya from launch to participation in major wars also notice board for families of ex-crew of HMS Malaya.

HMS Malaya was built by Armstrong Ship Builders, and launched 18th March 1915. She took part in the Battle of Jutland. and sustained eight hits, and took eight weeks for repairs. During World War Two, she was in the Mediterranean during 1940 and took part in operations against the Italian Fleet. She was also involved in Convoy escort duties of the west African Coast. During these operation she was torpedoed by U-106 on the 20th March 1941. and her repairs were carried out in the USA. from July 1941 to the summer of 1943, she was involved again in Convoy protection on the UK to Malta and Cape Town. to UK, routes. She was scrapped at Faslane in Scotland on the 12th April 1948. and interesting note. the ships bell can be seen in the East India Club, London.

Compliment 1,124 to 1300 approx. Armament 8 15-inch Guns and 12 6-inch guns and 8 4-inch A.A Guns 16 2-pdr AA Guns and 1 aircraft. Speed 24 knots, Displacement 31,100 tons.

The following has kindly been sent in by Royal Marine Alyn Lloyd.

Following a final engagement shelling Cecembre (I am aware spelling is incorrect), the ship sailed to Scotland and anchored broadside at the end of the loch. A detachment of Royal Marines stayed in pairs in buildings which overlooked the loch, all other crew were returned to Division by train. At a precise time we had the duty of herding the inhabitants to a station of our choice from which the loch could not be overlooked. In this respect the Scots were understanding, co-operative and kind. At this time the Wellingtons flew into the loch and dropped bouncing bombs (dead weight, no explosives). These, or at least some of them went through the ship, in at one side and out the other. Even after the first of several days of these exercises we returned to a wreck. We eventually departed a hulk and returned to Portsmouth by train.

JAMES ALBERT POYTON

I have just found a photo of my father in his uniform. The cap badge clearly says HMS MALAYA. I suspect it was taken around 1924. His name was James Albert Poyton. I would love to get hold of any information that may be relevant. I know he was at HMS Ganges in 1920, served sometime in the Turkey area and was invalided with a weak heart sometime in the late 20s. He finished as an acting Chief Petty Officer I think. That is all I know. I do have a few old photos some of which I guess were on HMS Malaya.   Ian Poyton.   contact here

FREDERICK WALTER DIXON.. My Father Frederick Walter Dixon served on the HMS Valiant and HMS Malaya during the war as a Leading Seaman.   I would like to hear from anyone who remembers him and in particular if anybody knows anything about the accident which cost him his life in Portsmouth Harbour on the 2nd June 1947 as my mother was never given any details as to what happened apart from the fact that the launch was in collision with a boat.    His body was found three weeks later washed ashore on Thorney Island.   E-Mail me at Tinabeard@aol.com

I am hoping to locate old shipmates who served with my dad aboard the H.M.S. Malaya in 1943. He was born in Rosyth, Scotland on Sept. 1, 1924. I would love to hear from anyone who might have details of life aboard this great ship. I wish it had been preserved like many battleships in the USA. I live in Rochester,NY He loved this ship very much. I believe he left the ship while at sea when he became very ill and was transfered to another ship by lines passed to the other ship. I think this was in August of '43. He later served aboard a minesweeper at D-Day, 6/6/44. Very glad to see this new site! Regards,  Kevin Thomas Murphy       contact here

CHARLES HENRY TRINDER..  My Grandfather Charles Henry Trinder served on HMS Malaya from the time she was commissioned until 1919. He took part in the battle of Jutland and as can be seen from the photo was a ships carpenter & diver. As such, he would have been involved in damage control. If any one can supply any information about the action and the crew muster list during the period 1916-1919 I would be grateful.    Neil Trinder

My father, who died in October 2002, served as a midshipman on HMS Malaya between February 1939 - August 1940. I would be interested both to trace anyone who knew him, and also anyone with memories of that time, for a book I am working on. Patrick Alley bp@wombat38.freeserve.co.uk

MESSAGE FOR MR GARNER...While looking through the HMS Valiant site I came across the photograph of your father on the ship. I have three photographs taken on one of these ships around the dates you mention. My father was a stoker on both the Malaya &Valiant during the war ; HMS Malaya:- May 1942 - October 1943. HMS Valiant:- May  1944- October  1946. As far as I know these dates are correct, he was on the ship during the dry dock incident. Perhaps Mr Garner knew him? His full name was Walter Arthur Chaney known as Arthur, from Yorkshire. Kind Regards, Edward Chaney. Contact me at edward@chaney.evesham.net
