Class Torpedo Boat Destroyers
These were the last Destroyers completed
before the outbreak of world war One, and the first class to be named in
the new Alphabetical system. Also six of the class were built with two
funnels with the remainder having Three. They were also the first class
to be given double torpedo Tubes. and another first was two destroyers
of the class HMS Leonidas and HMS Laforey had geared turbines. The
" L" Flotilla saw a lot of active service during the war. with
HMS Lance having fired the first naval shot of the war when it sank
(along with HMS landrail) the German minelayer Konigen Luise
they took part in most of the naval actions but only a few were at
Jutland. and during the war they formed the famous

HMS LANCE
FRANK VINCENT.. Frank Vincent my grand father served on HMS Lance in
WWI along with Edward ? Coburn, the latter died and Frank Vincent married
his widow. These are relations through a birth parent, I was adopted, not
a lot to go on, couldn't find Coburn on CWGC roll of honour. Any info
welcomed

ARTHUR JAMES FOORD.. My grandfather Arthur Foord
served on HMS Lance during WWI. His story was always that he fired the
first shot for the British Navy in WWI. I have so far determined that he
was on the ship which did indeed fire the first shot. I would like to find
anyone who can tell me anything at all about this ship. I was quite
stunned to find out that so far everything he said was true. Contact me at
lonergan@nexicom.net
HMS LYDIARD DR THOMAS HOBSON
KIRK.. Tom Kirk joined Lydiard as a surgeon in 1917 and stayed with
her on convoy duties for the rest of the war. He had been at
Giggleswick School (1912 - 1915) and the University of Durham, (Newcastle
Medical School, 1915 - 1917). He died at the age of 105 in November
2004 at Woolsington, Northumberland, and so was probably the Lydiard's
last surviving crew member. He was one of the last 20 or so survivors of
the Great War in this country. Contact
