Carrier Glorious - The Life and Death of an Aircraft Carrier by John Winton.

Carrier Glorious - The Life and Death of an Aircraft Carrier by John Winton.

One of the most extraordinary stories of human folly in World War Two. June 1940: the German battle-cruiser Scharnhorst and her sister ship Gneisenau were in the Arctic Sea, steaming north to intercept Allied convoys evacuating British, French and Polish troops from Norway, when they sighted the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious, escorted by two destroyers, steering for Scapa Flow. In a ferocious gun battle lasting over an hour, all the British ships were sunk, and more than 1500 men lost their lives. The few survivors were not found for three days. Glorious had left the main convoy to proceed independently. She was not flying an air reconnaissance patrol for her own safety. And she had not received any warning from British intelligence that German battle-cruisers were in the area. Drawing on Admiralty records and the testimony of those who served on Glorious, John Winton reveals the incredible human folly that led almost inexorably to this tragic end, against a background of one of the most disastrous campaigns of the Second World War for Britain and her allies.
