Humber Class Monitors HMS Severn,
HMS Humber and HMS Mersey. These three small river monitors ordered by
Brazil and built by Vickers under the name Solimoes, Javary and Madeira
started sea trials in 1913 but due to the Brazilian Navy being unable to
afford them, and to stop others buying them and falling into German
hands, the Royal Navy purchased them for £155,000 and formerly
commissioned into the Royal Navy on 3rd August 1914. |

HMS Mersey. Commissioned in the Royal Navy in
August 1914 and served in operations off the Belgian coast until
November 1914. After this she was refitted at Chatham and during March
1915 she was towed to Malta where she was diverted with her sister ship
HMS Severn to East Africa to engage the German ship Konigsberg. Refitted
at Durham in March 1916, she was towed by the ocean liner Trent back to
the Mediterranean during March-May 1918. Returning to the UK in May 1918
where she was paid off. She moved to Queenstown in 1919 and was
eventually sold in 1921.

My Father served on HMS Humber from 14.5.1919 to 24.10.1919 .
During this period the ship was engaged in operations on the River
Dvina in Russia. There was a limited edition book written about this
operation , called "Bolos and Baryshynas ". He passed this
book on to me when I was young but it has gone missing over the years.
I am anxious to try and obtain a copy of it ,and wondered whether any of
you readers would know of this book. Brian Sell terrybrian@tiscali.co.uk
