HMS Penelope  was the last of the small  Ironclads to be built. initially classified as a armoured Corvette. she had a shallow draught built by Pembroke Dockyard and laid down 4th September 1865 and launched 18th June 1867 completed 27th June 1868.  Served in the Channel fleet until June 1869 then became Guard ship at Harwich until 1882. In 1882 her squadron was at Gibraltar and she was transferred on account of her shallow draught to go to the Suez canal operations. She was present at the Bombardment of Alexandria.  she was part of the inshore attacking group of ships along with HMS Monarch and HMS Invincible and was the closest to the Western batteries.  firing 231 shells and receiving only minor damage she required a new mainyard and a 8 inch gun which had been damaged by a shell which had exploded in the embrasure.  She became the Flagship in the Suez canal until the hostilities officially ended, returning to Hawich  until 1887. when she was paid off. and went to refit in 1887 until 12897. then was dispatched to Simonstown as harbour receiving ship until 1897when  she became prison hulk at the Cape. (South Africa) sold for scrap at cape town in 1912 for £1,650.
