HMS Nile of the Mediterranean Squadron
The Nile was a steel armoured battleship of the
early Hamilton Programme and was completed for sea in 1890. She was built
at Pembroke Dockyard and engined by Messrs Maudsley, Son & Field. The
Nile and her sister ship the Trafalgar
were the immediate predecessors of the Royal Sovereign Class of battleship
and carried their heavy guns in armoured turrets. In 1896 the Nile was
commanded by Captain Orford Churchill.

HMS Nile in Dry Dock at Malta 1896
Here we have an end on view of the Nile of the Mediterranean Fleet
in 1896, with her bows towards us, taken when the ship was lying in dock
at Malta. The Nile was one of the most powerful battleships afloat in the
1890's and like her sister ship Trafalgar, the Nile was a turret ship. The
Nile owed her name to Nelson's great victory over Brueys in 1798. This
Nile's predecessor was a 90 gun line of battleship, built in 1839 and was
still in existence serving in the Mersey as a Mercantile Marine officers'
training ship under the name of Conway in 1896.
