HMS Kent, Saigon, 1939.

My grandfather Sidney Tilley served on the Kent while she was commissioned in china 1938 - 1940. After over 2 years away at sea and traveling to what he thought home, the Kent was torpedoed off Bardia. He was killed. he was 30yrs old.  Through research I have found that there was cine film held at the imperial war museum and went there for a private viewing with my family. We looked at rolls of cine film for the years that he served on her. We actually saw him, he was taking part in a rowing regatta. The surprising thing to us was that the footage was in colour. It was all filmed privately by Captain Blundell. We had the footage copied onto videotape. Also I obtained a copy of the ships logs for the time leading up to my Grandfathers death and afterwards. These were very interesting. I didn't realise you could do that. I have attached a photo of the Kent in Saigon 1939 (above).   Maybe what I have told will be of interest to anyone who had relatives on the Kent or wants other avenues to research!

Ship's Mascots.

The Kent was sent on its own to Archangel (now called Arkhangel’sk) in Russia; the rumour was that they were delivering a shipment of gold bullion. They had an Admiral on board for the trip which was unusual. He was presented with the reindeer by a senior official in Archangel and brought it back to the U.K. It ended up in Edinburgh zoo. Ivor says that on the return trip announcements would come over the ships address system, “Reindeer clean-up party fall in”

Daphne the seal, who died on June 13th 1943.

My Grandfather Robert Edmonds served on HMS Kent in the early forties & made his way to petty officer, I'm interested on hearing from anyone who served with or remembers him from his time in the navy. Robert ( Bobby ) sadly past away 5 years past leaving his wife & our grandmother Margaret, also my mothers name. I have loads more pics if interested, also something else which may be of interest to his ex shipmates, relating to, was it Daphne the seal was called.   Hoping for reply's, his Grandson Kevin.
