Battleship histories. Royal naval battleship HMS Indefatigable. Battleship website dedicated to the history of HMS Indefatigable from its launch to its participation in major wars. Also a notice board for families of ex-crew of HMS Indefatigable.

A HMS Indefatigable took part in the pursuit of Goeben in the Mediterranean in 1914. HMS Indefatigable fought at the Battle of Jutland  where she was hit by shells from Von Der Tann and sank so quickly that only 2 crew could be rescued.  

Displacement: 19,100    Speed: 25.8 knots   Compliment: 820 increasing to 850 in wartime.

Armament: Eight 12-inch guns in pairs and sixteen 4 -inch guns.  One or two 3 inch anti aircraft guns in 1915/16 and from 1917 one 4 inch Anti Aircraft Gun.

HMS Indefatigable was commissioned in February 1911 and joined the 1st Cruiser squadron (renamed in 1913 as the 1st Battle Cruiser Squadron. HMS Indefatigable joined the 2nd battle Cruisers squadron in the Mediterranean and at the outbreak of world war one in August took part in the pursuit of Goeben and Breslau and also bombarded Cape Helles. She became the Flagship of Admiral Carden in November 1914 until January 1915/ After a refit at Malta she joined the Grand Fleet as part of the 2nds battle Cruiser Squadron and was sunk at Jutland by 11 inch shell fire from Van Der Tann. Official reports state she was hit by two shells in the X magazine causing her stagger out of formation sinking by the stern this was followed by another hit on the foredeck causing a much more larger  explosion which destroyed her.

MESSAGES

JAMES MUNRO..  Ordinary Seaman James Munro, age 18, son of Thomas and Mary A Munro of Stirling, Scotland was lost with Indefatigable and all but two of her crew at Jutland in 1916.  He is commemorated on the Roll of Honour in the Memorial chapel at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Dumbarton Road, Stirling.  contact here 

      

Please find attached photos of a codd patent soft drink bottle which I think was issued to the HMS Indefatigable when she was being fitted out in Malta in 1915I dived the bottle at a picnic area in Sydney where the troops from the Ist World War came for repatriation and restAs far as I know these bottle have been found nowhere else in AustraliaCould you advise me if you have seen these in UK?   Terry Russo      terus2@optusnet.com.au
