HMS Inconstant was the direct result of the American Wampanoag Class, and at the time was the fastest warship afloat.  

Displacement: 5780 tons.    I.H.P: c.7,360    Length: 337 ft 4 in.    Beam: 50 ft 3 ins.   Depth: 25 ft 6 ins.    Speed: c.16.2 knots.     Complement: 600.

Naval Historians, Descendents of Crew Notice board

MESSAGES 

CHARLES MINTRUM.  I am trying to find out details of a CHARLES MINTRUM who was an 'Ordinary Seaman' on HMS Inconstant on the 1881 census, aged 19.  I have been unable to 'identify' his familyso far. The MINTRUM/AMs are mainly Hampshire families.  I would be very grateful for any advice or help (I am unable to get to the PRO at Kew)  Wenda MIntrum    email here
