HMS
Hawkins a Cavendish Light Cruiser Class of the Royal
Navy the class included: HMS Hawkins, HMS Cavendish, HMS
Effingham, HMS Frobisher, HMS and HMS Raleigh. These Light
Cruisers did not see service during world war one,
HMS Hawkins was built by Parsons at Chatham and
launched 1st October 1917. During world war two she served with the
South Atlantic fleet 1940 - 1941, transferred tot he East Indies fleet
1941 - 1942, Eastern Fleet from 1942 to 1944, and back to the Home
Fleet in 1944, became a training ship in 1944 to 1945 until going into
reserve after the second world war. finally scrapped at Dalmuir, Scotland
in December 1947.
Displacement:
9,800tons ( Speed: 30.5kt
Complement: 400 increasing to 437 as a Flagship.
Armament:
Eight 4 inch anti-aircraft guns and four 2pdr anti-aircraft guns.
Eight 0.5 inch machine guns.

HMS HAWKINS
The
ensign flown by H.M.S.Hawkins on D-Day (Operation Overlord) is to be
handed over to T.S.Hawkins (Stockport Sea Cadets) for safe keeping, at a
special service to be held at Portsmouth Cathedral on Sunday 22nd February
2004 at about 11.00 hrs. Anyone interested is welcome to come along. RONALD
WALTER FORMSTON AB P/JX161646. My late father served on HMS Hawkins from
24th November 1939 to 3rd January 1942. I would be interested in hearing
from anybody who knew him. I think he was a gunner. He passed away in
