HMS Glasgow - Name History

The sixth “GLASGOW” is a turbine cruiser, launched at Fairfield’s Yard in 1910.  She is of 4800 tons, 22,000 horse- power, and 25 knots speed.  Her length, beam, and draught are 430ft., 47ft., and 15ft.

Built by Fairfield and launched 30th september 1909, completed September 1910. when completed she joined the 2nd battle Squadron of the home Fleet. Then in 1911 she joined the South American station. she was re commissioned in september 1912, then went to the South Atlantic in 1913, and back to South America station on the outbreak of the world war one. where she captured the German SS Catherina on the 16th August 1914. Took part in the Battle of Coronel on the 1st November and managed to escape with the AMC Otranto. she retuned to port Stanley. Helped HMS Cornwall sink the Leipzig during the Battle of Falklands islands and caught the Dresden  at Jhuan Fernandez Island and sank her on the 14th march 1915. After this she moved to the Mediterranean theatre and took part in the hunt for the German raider Mowe in February 1916 and again September 1916. Joined the 8th Light Cruiser Squadron in the Adriatic 1917 -1 918. In June 1919 went to Gibraltar and near the end of the year went back to  Portsmouth. and Paid off in 1920, In 1921 she was used as a stokers training ship  and disarmed between 1921 and 1925. In January 1925 she was put on the disposal list and eventually sold for breaking in 1927.

Displacement: 4800 tons, 5,300 tons deep load,  Speed: 25 knots Range 5070 miles at 16 knots  Compliment:480   Armament: Two 6 -inch Guns  ten 4 -inch Guns Four 3 pounder, two 18-inch Torpedo Tubes
