HMS Captain. Masted Turret Ship. History
and photographs of HMS Captain, launched 1869 Commissioned April 1870. The first battleship for the Royal Navy designed and built privately. Captain Cowper Phipps Coles
designed her with revolutionary turret guns and deliberately low freeboard.
Her stability was insufficient and she rolled over in a gale. Just
17/ 18 men of the complement of around 500 survived."
