Submarine histories. Royal Navy Grampus class submarines. Submarine website dedicated to the history of HMS Grampus, HMS Narwhal, HMS Rorqual, HMS Cachalot and HMS Seal from their launch to their participation in major wars also notice board for families of ex-crew of Grampus Class submarines.

HMS Grampus.  Built at Chatham Dockyard and launched 25th February 1936. She served off China before being moved to the Mediterranean and was sunk by Italian Torpedo Boats Circe and CL10. of Augusta, Sicily 24th June 1940 ( it has also been shown lost of the 16th June 1940?) 

HMS Narwhal. Built by Vickers Armstrong at Barrow and launched 29th August 1935. Served  in the Mediterranean, West Indies, Home Waters. Narwhal was lost on the 30th July 1940. Lost by unknown causes off Norway but possibly by German Aircraft attack

HMS SEAL. Built at Chatham Dockyard 27th September 1938. She was on route to the China station when war broke out and was  diverted to the West Indies before returning to Home waters. Seal was damaged by Mine before being captured by the Germans on the 5th May 1940, who renamed her UB.A before at the end of the war being scuttled on the 3rd May 1945

HMS RORQUAL. Built by Vickers Armstrong at barrow and launched 21st July 1936. Served off china before going to the Mediterranean in 1940. In 1944 going to the Eastern Fleet. Rorqual was the only Submarine of the class to survive the war and was finally scrapped at Newport 17th March 1946

Grampus 25th February 1936 Lost on 24th June 1940.
Narwhal 29th August 1935 Lost in July 1940.
Rorqual 21st July 1936 Scrapped on 17th March 1946 at Newport.
Cachalot 2nd December 1937 Lost on 4th August 1941.
Seal 27th September 1938 Captured by the German Navy on 5th May 1940 and renamed UBA. She was scuttled on 3rd May 1945.

Displacement: 1520 tons    Compliment: 59.    Armament: 6 x 21 inch torpedo tubes ( bow, 12 torpedoes). One 4 inch quick-firing MkXII gun, plus 50 mines.      Speed: surface speed 15.75 knots, submerged speed 8.75 knots

FREDERICK STANLEY BOWLER.. My grandfather Frederick Bowler was lost on board HMS Grampus. He left a young wife (my grandmother - Mrs Annie Elizabeth Bowler from Tamworth, Staffordshire) and a son (my father - David Frederick Bowler). Does anyone remember Frederick or are there any photos or any other information about the event. Contact me at Susan.Higgs@tic.ac.uk 

WALTER HEDLEY: My Grandfather went down on HMS Grampus 16 June 1940. I am looking for any photos of the crew of Grampus as we have no photos at all. he was also on HMS Rorqual during 1937 to 1940. If you can help, please contact J J Glynn (nee Hedley) at Mauriceglynn@aol.com 

P.O WILLIAM GEORGE GLANVILLE. Was lost onboard HMS Grampus. My family understand HMS Grampus was lost off Agusta Sicily on the 24th June 1940. The cause of her loss is unknown. Were there any survivors. Does anyone remember Billy Granville. If you can help please contact Jeanette Perry at jinperry@tesco.net
