German
Destriyers or Zerstorer and Large Torpedo Boats or gross Torpedoboote
were basically the same and had very little distinction between them.
The term Destroyer did not come into effect witht he German navy7 until
the B.97 class which was built in 1914/1915. Unto this time the
Torpedo Boats and Destroyers were not named except with a
consecutive number and a letter denoting the Naval yard it was built
at. The three main builders up to 1912 was Germaniawerft,
(prefaced with B) A.G Vulcan (prefaced with V ) and Schichau (prefaced
with S) another three yards started building after 1912 and they were
Blohn and Voss (prefaced with B) Howaldtswerke (prefaced with H )
and Wilhelmshaven Imperial Dockyard prefaced with W ) In
1912 New lettering system was introduced starting with V.1 and
boats which were still in operation were renamed with there number but
the letter changed to V. Brief Naval histories of the German
destroyers of the Kriegsmarine from pre 1906 until the end of World War Two. |

German Destroyers
1939 - 45 by Gordon Williamson
The German Destroyer fleet of World War II consisted of nine
classes: the Diether von Roeder class, the Leberecht Maas class and the
wartime classes Z23, Z35, Z37, Z40, Z43, Z46 and Z52. These
vessels, though fewer in number than the British destroyer fleet, tended
to be much bigger and more powerful than their Allied counterparts.
They served their country well throughout operations in the Channel,
North Sea, the Far North and in the rescue of civilians from East
Prussia during the final days of the war. This title describes
their design, development and operational use from the fjords of Narvik
through to the end of the war
