Default Calling all COASTAL FORCES veterans for reunion Vis island, Croatia
This year will be the last visit of the WW2 veterans to Vis which is taking place during week beginning 16th May.

We are laying on a special jamboree for this final year as it coincides with the 200th anniversary year of the Battle of Lissa, in which one of England's most successful frigate captains (Capt Sir Wm Hoste, a protege & good friend of Nelson) vanquished the old enemy's squadron of seven ships with only four of his own!

As usual the events will be attended by the British Ambassador to Croatia, his Defence Attache and a large Croatian military contingent, but this year in recognition the UK MoD has released a serving colonel in the Royal Marines who will be answering questions about his experiences in Afghanistan, etc. This is particularly appropriate as his regiment has a distinguished record of service on Vis: more recently in WW2, with the activities of 'Mad Jack' Churchill of No 2 Commando, Royal Marines; and then under Capt Hoste, when his detachment of RM successfully stormed a heavily defended fort north of Venice in 1809.

We have arranged a 2 day programme of events to coincide with the Ambassador's visit on Tuesday, 17th May PM until he leaves on Thursday, 19th.

For those that don't know, Vis is a stunningly beautiful island free of mass tourism but with excellent restaurants and wine! ie a PERFECT PLACE for a PARTY! If you are interested to know more please contact me at Miles@WalkingHolidaysVis.com

Half Price! - £40.00 		Showing visible signs of her tangle with British cruisers at the Battle of the River Plate, the German pocket battleship Graf Spee slips into the neutral waters of the Montevideo roadstead for light repairs. This was to be the last haven for the Graf Spee which was later scuttled at the harbour mouth, her commander Kapitan zur See Langsdorff believing a large British fleet to be waiting for attempted escape into the South Atlantic.

Half Price! - £65.00 		The pride of the British fleet, The Mighty Hood as she was known, was launched in 1918. Weighing in at over 40,000 tons she was 860 feet long and had eight 15 inch guns, at her launch she was more than a match for any adversary. Hood sailed the world in the inter-war years and was admired in every foreign port she visited, however with a lack of major refits in this time the second world war found the Hood unprepared for a major battle, On the 24th of May 1941 the German battleship Bismarck found Hoods achilles heel within only a few salvos, namely her inadequate deck armour. Hood exploded in a huge fireball from which only three sailors survived. Here HMS Hood is seen with Force H in the Mediterranean. Winston Churchill knew that the powerful French fleet at Mers-el-Kebir could fall into German hands at any time and that the threat had to be removed by any means. On the 3rd of July 1940 the French fleet was duly dispatched by Force H. The Strasbourg being the only French battleship able to make her escape. Hodd is depicted opening fire at 17.55 hours with the battleships Resolution and the destroyer HMS Foxhound to her stern.

Half Price! - £3200.00 		Having departed the Namsen Fjord in Norway, on a course home to England across the North Sea, HMS Arab was intercepted by a Heinkel He.115 and ordered to sail due east or be attacked. His orders ignored, the German pilot began a series of passes over the trawler, raking the small vessel with continuous fire from both of its guns. The gallant crew of the Arab returned fire with all Lewis and Oerlikon guns blazing, the Heinkel being mortally wounded as it made a low pass across the bow of Arab, finally plunging into the sea some two miles astern of the trawler who continued, without further incident, to her destination at Scapa.

Colin Edwards gave Honda racing another victory with an inspired performance during the last race of the season to put rival Troy Bayliss into second place. Troops of the 1st Hampshires assaulting Gold Beach during the Normandy Landings. Gold beach was one of the British beaches on D-Day. Gold beach was the western most beach of the British beaches, on D-Day. Gold beach was between two twenty metre high cliffs where German fortifications had been built. The beach had been protected by concrete casemates which took some time to break through. This happened with support form British tanks in the afternoon of D-day 6th June. The British tanks and reinforcements moved off the beaches towards Saint-Come-de-Fresene and Arromanches which were both liberated by 9pm.

Half Price! - £700.00 		Wherever the GIs went they took their Jeeps with them, and before the war was run the little quarter-ton, 4-wheel drive, utility vehicle was as well known around the world as the Model T Ford. Nicolas Trudgian has painted a compelling image, set back in time when the little Jeep was omnipresent on and around the roads and battlefields of a war-torn world. It is Christmas 1944 and, as a gaggle of 339th FG P-51 Mustangs disturb the peace of this ancient English village, a little Jeep waits patiently outside the pub while her occupants sample the local ale. A wonderfully nostalgic painting that will bring back pleasant memories to many.
