The youtube film from 0:41 to 0:48 shows a brief glimpse of Warspite but given the neutrality stripes on B turret is presumably pre-war stock like the initial few seconds.

Not really upset about the occasional typo!

It is when it comes to titles of threads which, maybe searched for in later times.

I'm sure we would'nt allow a title "The Battle of Doggy Bank".......go uncorrected, or would we?

The Dickens' book has given me a chance for some consideration.
It says that HMS Punjabi was hit five times with 5in shells, lost some 25% of her crew and was damaged quite severly. It forced her CO CDR Lean to get away from the action - "I damned sorry, I have to come out of it" - message was sent to ADM Whitworth (1400hrs).
At about 1500hrs HMS Punjabi was back in action with "two boilers, three gun mountings and all fires out" and was sent to Rombaks fiord together with three other destroyers, to finish the job.
In the Falklands War HMS Brillant was hit with just one 20mm cannon shell that put out of action most(all?) of her weapon systems to the extent that her CO in his memories remarks they were left with just couple of HMG because also two additional 40mm Bofors "improved" with malfunctiong electric trigger system were unable to fire a round and thus reduced the fighting capabilities of the ship to nil.
I have no doubt that the very brave CDR Lean turned in his grave hearing this.

If we bridge Nelson times to nowadays state of art ships and their sophisticated equipment/weapons one would notice that from the sail ships which poured on themselves tons of iron and were still able to fight even when reduced to the status of wooden shattered boxes, across WW I, WWII when ships that sometimes suffered incredible losses and huge damages and still were fighting we have reached the bottom when something a little bigger than .45 put out of action the warship.

Regards

Thank you so much for posting this map. My Grandfather was aboard HMS Hotspur during this Battle and unfortunately was one of the (from memory 13) who died when it was hit and badly damaged. I can now include it with the very few items we have of/for him.

On the 1st of August 1798, thirteen French ships of the line sat anchored in Aboukir Bay off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt, in support of Napoleon who was inland with his troops attempting to conquer the country. As nighttime approached so did Lord Horatio Nelson and the British fleet. Nelson had been hunting Napoleon at sea for months; at Aboukir Bay he had found the French fleet, trapped and unprepared for battle. Nelsons audacious plan was to attack the French on their unprotected prot side, the plan had its risks; the whole of the British fleet could run aground in the shallows - but Nelson knew the waters too well. The Battle of the Nile was one of the most decisive in the history of naval warfare. By the end of the battle nearly all the French ships were sunk or captured. The 124-gun flagship - and the pride of the French navy - LOrient, had exploded with such ferocity that it halted the battle for over ten minutes. Napoleons ability to dominate the region had been crushed, whilst Nelson was to become a hero throughout the whole of Britain.

In 1992 Matthew graduated in Geography from St. Catherine's College, Oxford, where he was President of the Oxford Rowing Club. He took part in the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race in 1990 and 1991, when Oxford beat Cambridge by substantial distances. Also in 1992, at the age of only 21, Matthew had his first taste of Olympic success, when in a coxless pair with partner Sir Steve Redgrave, he won the gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics. Prior to that Olympic win he and Redgrave had enjoyed an unbeaten international season, and it was already obvious that Matthew was developing to become one of the world's greatest oarsmen. At the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 the Pinsent / Redgrave duo won another gold medal and throughout the nineties their outstanding combination also brought them seven world championship golds. Their unbroken run of success continued through to the millennium Olympic games in Sydney when Pinsent, again with Redgrave (now in a coxless four with James Cracknell and Tim Foster) again triumphed earning Pinsent his third Olympic gold medal. The race in which he did it was voted Britain's greatest sporting moment and the crew secured themselves a very special place in the heart of the nation. After Sydney, Matthew formed a seemingly invincible coxless pair partnership with James Cracknell MBE. Undefeated throughout 2001, they went on to complete a unique feat in the history of rowing, by winning the coxless pair at the world championships in Lucerne, a mere two hours after winning the coxed pairs. In the 2002 world championships in Seville they defended their coxless pairs title, beating an experienced Australian crew who had beaten them in Lucerne earlier in the year and breaking the world record by 4 seconds in the process. On Saturday 21st August 2004 at the Athens Olympic games, Matthew Pinsent CBE entered Olympic history. In one of the classic sporting moments of all time, he led the Great Britain coxless four to victory over the Canadian world champions by only eight hundredths of a second. Matthew was awarded the MBE in the 1993 New Year's Honours List and the CBE in the New Year's Honours List 2003. In the 2005 New Year's Honours List he was awarded a knighthood.

Without doubt one of the most outstanding and versatile aircraft in the Allied inventory during World War II, the Bristol Beaufighter was to endure a cautious reception by its crews when it first entered service, not least due to difficulties experienced by crews attempting to abandon a stricken aircraft in an emergency. Its performance and hard-hitting potential quickly overcame such doubts, however, and it went on to earn a commendable reputation - and the nickname Whispering Death. Here, two 254 Sqn TF. MkXs attack a captured Norwegian vessel in 1945.
