Absolutely beautiful models, all of them. Talisman is a real jewel!

The quality of the models obviously a direct result of the quality of the plans they are based on, modeler's skill level or no. You should be proud you designs are "at sea!"

Now, about those plans for a 1/350 HMS Tiger (WWI).....

Regret no Tim, alas I do not have the patience or skill to build these!"
Only warships I have drawn to date are the Plover/Peacock class built by Hall Russell. The model of Greta won the Gold Medal at a Model Engieer Exhibition for Don Brown some years ago. There could be a few more about.
Thanks for comments.

I used to love model-making but these days regret i have no opportunity to indulge so am very envious of your quite obvious patience and skill! my dear old dad served in Ashanti during the war which was how i immediately recognised her number, would you know if it was a scratch build or kit derived? I am not sure i could justify a kit anyway as these seem to cost almost as much as the real ship when new!
all best

Not sure Tim, it was taken quite a few years ago now. Try some of the model kit sites such as Deans Marine etc who market GRP kits. Agree with your comments re price, hence continuing to dra plans to encourage scratch builders.
Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jim,
I have just read this message,
re your photo of the Hunan, where is this picture taken? in the UK?
I had a friend who built this same model, also he built the later Hunan, he passed away 2 years ago. He lived out here in Melbourne, Aust. He was a master mariner who worked for the Swires company, and he served on these ships. I will find some photos to post.
Cheers

Tim:

I seem to remember in another post re Ashanti, you mentioned you had a fine model of her, custom built. Any chance of posting photographs?? She was a fine ship, and epitomized the "destroyer" of her day. Would love to see a good model of her up close. Especially considerin the close connection you have to the ship.

Sorry to be so late, I think you are referring to Mr Mackay, who built the Hunan model from my plan which was in Model Shipwright magazine. This was built by another model maker

Jim,

Did you ever do drawings of the old radar trials ship HMS Boxer? I used to have a plan from Model Shipwright which I lent to someone who promptly lost it.

While I'm at it, was it you who did the drawings of the Castle Class weather ships?

The Hunan model was also made by Bryan Young of Tynemouth MBC.
I finally got to see it recently as it and some other of his boats were stolen about 11 years ago and it has just been returned in the past couple of months.
A very nice looking ship.

It is August 1944, barely two months since the Allies landed their first troops on the beaches of Normandy. After the failed Operation Lüttich (codename given to a German counterattack during the Battle of Normandy, which took place around the American positions near Mortain from 7 August to 13 August, 1944 ) The German Panzer Divisions were in full retreat, The British and American Generals believed it to be critical to halt them before they cauld regroup. Caught in the Gap at Falaise, the battle was to be decisive. Flying throughout a continuous onslaught, rocket-firing Typhoons kept up their attacks on the trapped armoured divisions from dawn to dusk. The effect was devastating: at the end of the ten day battle the 100,000 strong German force was decimated. The battle of the Falaise Pocket marked the closing phase of the Battle of Normandy with a decisive German defeat. It is believed that between 80,000 to 100,000 German troops were caught in the encirclement of which 10,000 to 15,000 were killed, 45,000 to 50,000 taken prisoner, and around 20,000 escaped . Shown here are German Tiger I tanks under continues attack by Royal Aoir Force Typhoons.
