An end of an era in Gibraltar......at the end of last month (November) all ex RMAS vessels stationed in Gibraltar were sold off by Serco Gib / Mod Gib. The tug CAPABLE and sullage lighter 1704U were sold to the Nature Group for use in their oil recycling services (although rumoured that Capable may have been bought for another buyer) whilst the harbour launch CYCLONE has been sold to a local tour company and the habrour / pilot launch AGILE sold to local shipping company Molinary for use in the bay supplying vessels in anchor. Thus marks an end of any naval minor auxiliaries on the Rock!!

The pic attached was taken on the 20th November just before their sale. Notice that Capable was still wearing her pennant number and still flying the RMAS flag!!

So is the "flogging" of all the RMAS vessels stationed in Gibraltar a reflection on the scant number of RN ships left in service and thus liable to visit in the future??

[Off topic postscript]
Its a good thing that the vast majority [I think about 99%] of its residents remain determined to stay "British" as successive governments have left the whole subject of sovereignty down to the wishes of Gibraltarians.

Otherwise I expect the rock would be in dire danger of being taken over by Spain first jointly then eventually totally.

I agree Terry, the ever decreasing number of visits to the Rock plus expensive repairs to the vessels stationed in Gibraltar (although mainly the MoDs fault as the tugs' scheduled drydocking was put off back 4 years ago and never done plus Serco Gib's disinterest in having this fleet and not maintaining them, like I mentioned, until the last day this vessels were still flying the RMAS flag!!!!) have all contributed to finishing off this service on the Rock. Its cheaper to lease out a tug whenever its needed than keeping a crew and a tug (plus lighter and launches) and paying them a wage even though no ships are expected.

In answer to your postscript, although we all voted (or nearly all) to remain british (and we have done this twice!!) we should never have to resort to vote to do this if the british goverment would stop sending mixed signals to the spanish government. Although most of the local population have lost faith in the british government the only option (as set out by a treaty signed more than 300 years!!!!!) is stay with Britain or go to Spain.....and as you have seen we wish to remain british.

While surfing the net , i came across this image of Gibraltar .
While i was there for two years ,the place just looks the same .
The only thing i notice difference ,is the "guard ship " is a M.F.V berthed at coaling island , in stead of H.M.S ARLINGHAM {which i was ships company for a year}.
There is some thing berthed along side the detached mole , but what ??

It's the old UNWANTED Waiting to be blown to smithereens. Which would date the picture to circa 1977.

Hi Dave ,

She looks rather knacked in this image , so would that have been the first time she had been used as a target ,

A few photos from my own collection....hopefully they will be large enough for your enjoyment...

HMS Ajax in refit in Gibraltar. Photo 'Ajax 1' shows another Ikara Leander astern but her pennant number is hidden by the TCL lighter. The tug is RMAS Airedale.

The others are Leanders arriving in Gibraltar except for the one of HMS Newcastle and HMS Rothesay. RMAS Sealyham can be seen alongside ROthesay and the bows of RMAS Cyclone can just be seen to the far left. The stern just poking out from the right is of the armaments stores carrier RMAS Throsk.

Lastly the photo named 'Ships in Gib' shows two Leanders and two Type 12s in the destroyer pens at the North Mole. The Leander on the left is HMS Galatea. Also on the wharf known as the Extension Jetty is a Ness class sotres carrier and a Later Tide class oiler. In the background three SSKs can be seen alognside the Coaling Island (to the left) and on the South Mole can be seen HMS Tiger or Blake, HMS Ark Royal, an Ol class oiler and RFA Engadine. In the bay is another Ness class stores ship and either RFA Regent or Resource. The are other ships berthed just beyond the SSks but I cant make them out on the photo I have which unfortunately is a scan of the original. Probably someone can put a date to the pic.

Daniel
