Thanks for those pictures Dick.

I think the first two pictures show parts of the USN's "Great White Fleet" which I believe visited Gibraltar during 1909.

Thanks Terry, and yes you are correct, the first two pics are from the Great White Fleets' round the world tour and their visit to the Rock in 1909.

Here are a few more pics....

3 views of the harbour in the late 40a showing various US Navy vessels in port.

USS Tracy off Gibraltar in 1927.

US carrier USS Franklin D Roosevelt in the bay in the late 40s.

RN carrier HMS Eagle in the 1920s.

2 pics of HMS Ark Royal in Gibraltar on her last visit in 1978.

The last four pics taken between 1981 and 1982.....HMS Bristol, HMS Bulwark departing for the last time in 1981, RMAS Laymoor laid up & HMY Britannia leaving in 1981 with the Prince and Princess of Wales aboard for their honeymoon.

Superb collection Dan, thanks for posting them. The "old-time" shots such as the fleet anchored in 1931 are just fascinating stuff! Happy New Year out there..you'll get to it before we do here!

Bit of modern history recorded there Dan.

If taken together with the pictorial record of the last Type 42 destroyer having visited Gibraltar en-route back to UK, the transition from old style to new style destroyers operating in the Med. theatre will be complete.

Nice pics; thank you.
