Can't help you with uniform, but my mum gave me a 1942 soldiers pocket book which she had picked up previously at a local flea market in Germany. Here are 3 pages of ranks & rates of that era.

German naval uniforms were I believe similar in hue to ours so a matt navy blue would seem acceptable, I have found it best in the past to find a good photo and a shade similar to what you need and mix with black or white to get the precise shade you require.

A Very old and not very good formal photo of German Naval officers of WW2.The colours you have from Blaydon. This gives you a good idea where various awards were worn.Regards Steve.

Alexrad:

Any chance you could post those three pages in a size that makes the captions readable?? For those of us without real access to German military "stuff" (here in America) that information on uniform badges/patches and ranks would really be a nice addition to the forum data base. As is they are not readable when enlarged!

Hoping you can help out.
Thanks a lot!

Best Regards,

This is the best I can do since they come from a army pocket diary called 'Der Soldartenfreund" (The Soldier's Friend).

Alexrad: That enlargement is exactly enough to make them readable. Thanks so much for taking the time to bump them up! Really appreciate it!

Best regards, Don

From a recently acquired set of German Naval Magazines.Although I must admit in not too good a condition, but who can complain at £2 for fifty at a boot fair!!
I came across two unusual pictures.
1. A young U-Boat"Obermaat" (Petty Officer) in a studio portrait. The points of interest are the U-Boat war Badge worn beneath the Iron Cross on the left Brest, and more unusual is the Spanish Cross in bronze worn on the right Brest. This indicates that this man was a veteran of the Spanish Civil War.
2.U-Boat "Frontspange" or the U-Boat front Badge. This was not issued to the U-Boat crews until 1944,so few men survived long enough to qualify for it.
It was issued in Gold (Top) to Officers, and Bronze (bottom to enlisted men.
Hope they are of interest to anyone whose interest lies in this field.
Regards Steve.
