Hi everyone.

This is the first of many regular installments of new releases of naval books which may be of interest to our members and guests. While we will not be reviewing the books here, you are welcome to add your views on these or other books in our naval book forum. Also, we add each of these books to our online shop where our visitors are welcome to shop for them, knowing that every penny we make on naval book orders is spent on maintaining and upgrading our naval history sites and forum.

Here are our first four entries:

Moving Bases. Royal Navy Maintenance Carriers and Monabs by Cdr David Hobbs MBE RN Retd.


In this ground-breaking book Commander David Hobbs, a former Royal Navy pilot, describes the logistic support that enabled British aircraft carriers to carry out extended operations across the globe during World War 2 and the Korean Conflict. The deployment of specialised aircraft and component maintenance ships together with mobile air bases as key elements of the deployed fleets allowed the Royal Navy to fight as professional equals alongside the US Navy in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The book brings together original material and images, much of which is previously unpublished.

The Pedestal Convoy of August 1942 was one of the most heavily protected convoys in the history of sea warfare. Fourteen of the fastest cargo ships of the time were protected by 4 carriers, 2 battleships, 7 cruisers and 32 destroyers. The destroyer HMS Ashanti is in the foreground of the painting. Also depicted are the carrier HMS Indomitable, with her Hurricanes cirling the convoy overhead, and the cargoe ship Port Chalmers to the right of the picture.

TWR Jaguar XJR 9LM - Winner of the 1988 Le Mans. The car in this image is shown at maximum speed on the Mulsanne Straight (240mph) Drivers: Jan Lammers, Johnny Dumfries and Andy Wallace. This was the first win for Jaguar since 1957. Previous victories at Le Mans were in 1951 and 1953 with C types and in 1955, 1956 and 1957 with D types. Jaguar also won Le Mans in 1990 with the XJR 12LM.

In this lovely picture from Graham Bosworth, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) is seen flying past the very famous Boston Stump in Lincolnshire (properly known as St Botolph*#39;s Church). Called the Boston 'Stump' because the tower was completed over a period of 100 years, appearing as a stump on the horizon (alternative theory is that the tower should have had a spire on top of it and the 'stump' is therefore the base. St Botolph's is one of the largest parish churches in England. Founded in 1390, St Botolph's is aiming to raise £3,000,000 by 2009 in time for its 700th birthday and for much-needed restoration. The BBMF is much beloved by many people of all ages and the sounds of the engines from these World War II aircraft still draws the crowds. Based at Conningsby in Lincolnshire the formation displays throughout Europe.

Oberfeldwebel Albert Kerscher, commander of 2nd company 511 Heavy Tank Battalion aided by a Panzer IV, two Hetzers, a Kingtiger and a Pak gun, successfully defended against concerted Soviet air and armoured attacks, his action buying valuable time for the evacuation of German wounded from Pilau and scoring his 100th victory in the process.

The Sturmgeschutz III of Leutnant Heinz Deutsch, Stug-Brigade XII, and paratroops of 7th Fallschirmjager Division counterattacking the Allied advance into the Reichswald forest in the final months of the war. The small Stug brigade numbering at its peak only 30 assault guns was responsible for the destruction of 250 allied tanks, Deutsch's gun claiming 44 of that total.
