Default St. George's Day

Happy St. GEORGE,S DAY. Why dont the English celebrate this day as a National Day. does anyone know, in Australia they celebrate nearly all national days except St. George,s Day, maybe its because of cricket.

Default St. George's Day - 23 April

I am bravely flying the Union Flag here in Sweden (don't have a St George's flag yet). But then here we don't have to go begging the Council for permission to put up a flag pole; and flying the flag isn't considered ultra-nationalist.

As a boy scout we always used to celebrate St. George's day with a parade and a church service. Do they not do that anymore? Here in Wales most of us celebrate St. David's day by wearing a daffodil or a leek badge on our lapels. The daffodil is sometimes called the Welsh Leek hence the wearing of the leek. The school children dress up in our national dress: the girls in bonnets and aprons etc and the boys in waistcoats, flat caps and the like. We are hoping that our Welsh Assembly government will make the day into a public holiday. Our red dragon flag, "Y draeg goch" is always conspicuously displayed all over Wales on any day of the year and we are all very proud of being Welsh. Although I am English by birth I consider myself very much a Welshman having lived here for nearly twenty five years. Yes we are nationalistic but in a good way. We are not far right, nazi types but we are proud of our country, language and culture and ultra proud of all that our people achieve. Why don't the English feel the same way? I'm sure they do really but as Derek says as a nation they fall over themselves in an effort not to cause offence to others. All very commendable but do these others feel the same way? I don't think so! I'm sure that we are supposed to be a Christian country but the muslims seem to have forgotten that. England was once known as the capital of 'fish and chips' but I think now its most likely Tikka Massala! OK, OK chief, I'm getting off my soapbox now.

Best wishes
Jan

It was Saturday 4th May 2002, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Four days later, on Wednesday 8th, Arsenal rode into Old Trafford. This time a goal by Sylvain Wiltord on his 100th appearance for the club was enough for Arsene Wenger's team to overcome Manchester United and clinch the Premiership title, maintaining a record of scoring in every league game of the season. For the second time in four years under their long-serving and inspirational captain Tony Adams, Arsenal had performed the classic double of English football, the third in their history making 2001-02, a season never to be forgotten.

On the morning of 21st April 1917, coastal airship No C.17 was on a routine patrol captained by Sub Lieutenant E G O Jackson, when sometime around 8.00am, she was attacked by German seaplanes and shot down. Such was their vulnerability that these huge battlebags were an easy target for marauding enemy scouts, their single Lewis guns achieving little by way of defence. The Hansa Brandenburg W.12, on the other hand, was a nimble and useful aircraft that the Germans put to good use in the coastal defence role.
