Default HMS Abermarle

HMS Ablemarle, Victory, Egmont

Seeking information on P. O'Hanlon who served as a stoker on these ships during WW1 hostilities.Any information about the ships would be also welcome.

Some info for you:

Victory 11 was a naval training establishment at Crystal palace and not actually a ship.

Similarly, Egmont was a RN shore establishment within on old fort in Malta. In 1933 the establishment was renamed Fort St Angelo.

I am assuming you mean the battleship HMS Albermarle? If so, look at this site for some photos:

Hope this helps.

John

Hi John,
Thank you for your reply. Just obtained a hand written record of my Dads service record for WW1 and it is difficult to deciper the writing, so please excuse the spelling mistakes. Do you have any links I could follow that would provide any further information? Also would you know if any of these establishments/ ships were under attack during the hostilities? Trish

Hi Rish

No need to apologise for spelling mistakes. I spelt Albemarle incorrectly myself in the last post. Not sure if Albemarle was damage in battle but was in collision with HMS Commonwealth prior to the war. She was very badly damaged in a storm whilst passing through the Pentland Firth and had most of her bridge swept away. She served for a while as an ice breaker in arctic waters. One thing you may find interesting is that in 1907 Robert Falcon Scott (Scott of the Antartic) served aboard her.

There does not seem to be a great deal of info on Victory 11 going around. It seems that it was an accounting establishment for the Royal Naval Division. Between 1905 and 1914 it was in Portsmouth. 1914 to 1919 it seems to have been at Crystal Palace. There are other references to Victory IV and VI having been at CP too. I am sure there are books dealing with RN shore establishments that can be bought and would provide the answers.

If you want to see pictures of Egmont have a look at Maltese tourism sites as these usually have shot of Fort St Angelo, as it is now known.

I doubt either of the shore establishments came under attack in WW1 due to air power being in its infancy.

Regards.....John

As Admiral Nelsons flagship leads the British fleet towards the Franco-Spanish line, Captain Harveys Temeraire tries to pass the Victory in order to be the first to break the enemy column. HMS Victory, nearest, has royals and stunsails set and is making good way, her furniture boats strung behind in readiness for battle. On her poop deck, officers prepare to run up a signal.

It was Saturday 4th May 2002, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Wonderful goals by Ray Parlour and Freddie Ljungberg for Arsenal were too much for their London rivals Chelsea to capture the FA Cup. Four days later, on Wednesday 8th, Arsenal rode into Old Trafford. This time a goal by Sylvain Wiltord on his 100th appearance for the club was enough for Arsene Wenger's team to overcome Manchester United and clinch the Premiership title, maintaining a record of scoring in every league game of the season. For the second time in four years under their long-serving and inspirational captain Tony Adams, Arsenal had performed the classic double of English football, the third in their history making 2001-02, a season never to be forgotten.
