Default Hi!!, Need info...

Hi There
My name is Alison and I need some help please, My Great Great Grandad was in the Navy, and in 1885 he was baptised upon the HMS boscawen. and then it looks like he served on HMS Turquoise and HMS Wye, and it might be him, or his dad but he had a medal with 'Burma 1885-1887' on it (it did have the name of one of the above ships on it, I can't remember which).

I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of the above ships or crew pictures? My grandads name was Henry Edward Brown.

Or if any of you know any internet sites that may have this info I would like to know, Many Thanks, Alison Blake

Alison

Welcome to the forum.

HMS Boscawen was a training establishment in a number of locations, in service from 1862 to 1922, and again from 1932 to 1947. A number of ships were renamed HMS Boscawen whilst serving as homes for the base.

HMS Trafalgar was a 110-gun first-rate launched in 1841. She was converted to screw propulsion in 1859, and was renamed HMS Boscawen in 1873. She was sold in 1906.

It would appear that if your Grandfather was baptised in 1885 then it would have been aboard this ship. Do you know when he was born?

Hope this helps and good luck!

Regards....John

Alison

HMS TURQUOISE was a S Class Destroyer of 1918 and HMS WYE was a Modified W Class Destroyer which was cancelled . So I guess you must be talking about the predecessors of these ships which were...

HMS TURQUOISE Steam Corvette Built in 1876 and sold in 1892.

HMS WYE Storeship purchased in 1873 and sold 1906.

Does that fit the time frame you are looking for ??

Regards

gerry

Hi,

He was born in 1868 in Suffolk, So I assume any action in the first world war would be out, so any of the medals I have bearing his name would have had to been prior to that.

Many Thanks for your help!!

Alison - I think you will find that this is the HMS Turquoise that you were looking for a picture of.
As Gerry has pointed out she was a screw-corvette built in 1876.

Just seconds from opening fire with a broadside that will devastate her opponent, HMS Victory prepares to pass the stern of the French flagship Bucentaure, closely followed by the three-deckers HMS Temeraire and HMS Neptune. With guns unable to bear on the enemy fleet during the slow approach the British ships had endured terrible punishment with Victorys sails holed, her wheel smashed and her mizzen top shot away.

The Battle of Trafalgar was fought on a calm, almost windless day, on 21st October 1805. Nelsons revolutionary battle plan was to cut apart the larger Franco-Spanish fleet of Vice-Admiral Villeneuve by sailing in two single column divisions directly at right angles into the combined fleet and thus rendering almost half of the leading ships useless until the could turn and join the fight, which in such calm conditions could take hours. The battle raged for five hours in which time not one British ship was lost, however, Nelson would tragically lose his life at the very moment of his triumph, a triumph which rendered the British Navy unchallenged in supremacy for over a century. Here HMS Mars passes between the French ship Belleisle on her starboard and the French ship Fougeux on her port, firing a murderous hail of gunfire at both ships. Also shown in the painting on the left hand side is the Spanish ship Monarco and the French ship Pluton.

During a patrol on 6th July 1918, Christiansen spotted a British submarine on the surface of the Thames Estuary. He immediately turned and put his Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 floatplane into an attacking dive, raking the submarine C.25 with machine gun fire, killing the captain and five other crewmen. This victory was added to his personal tally, bringing his score to 13 kills by the end of the war, even though the submarine managed to limp back to safety. Christiansen survived the war and went on to work as a pilot for the Dornier company, notably flying the giant Dornier Do.X on its inaugural flight to New York in 1930. He died in 1972, aged 93.

Swordfish of 825 Sqn led by Lt-Cdr Esmonde begin their heroic attack on the battlescruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen as they make their way up the English Channel from Brest during Operation Cerberus on 12th February 1942. Although all the aircraft were lost and no significant damage was done to the German fleet, all the pilots were decorated for their bravery and Lt-Cdr Esmonde received the first Fleet Air Arm VC to be awarded, albeit posthumously. The painting depicts the first wave of Swordfish attacking the Scharnhorst with Gneisenau taking avoiding action in the distance. A German torpedo boat has turned to confront the attacking aircraft.

HMS Glowworm, burning severely after receiving hits from the mighty Admiral Hipper, is depicted turning to begin her heroic sacrifice off the Norwegian coast on 8th April 1940. Hugely out-gunned and already crippled, Glowworms captain, Lieutenant-Commander Roope rammed his destroyer into the side of the Admiral Hipper, inflicting a 40 metre rip in its armour belt before drifting away and exploding. 38 British sailors were rescued from the sea and Roope was awarded a posthumous VC for his bravery, the first earned by the Royal Navy in WWII.

Of similar configuration, but usually outclassed by its British contemporary, the Bristol F2b, the Luft-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft LVG was essentially a strong and stable observation aircraft that served widely during World War 1. On 21st May 1917, this example became the victim of the guns of Sergeant John H Jones, contributing to his eventual tally of 15 victories. Here, his pilot that day, Captain W G Mostyn, has already had a squirt using his forward-firing Vickers gun before manoeuvring their 22 Sqn machine into position for Jones to finish the job with his twin Lewis guns.

Nine enemy aircraft were shot down in the action, Baldwin accounting for two of them himself. 1st Battalion in action at Escaut Canal, Belgium, May 1940. The last Highland Regiment to wear a kilt in battle, attacking the Germans at the River Escaut. From the Diary of Captain R. Leah, 1st Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders : Tuesday 21st May : Bn left Ere about 2 a.m. to march back. Fortunately Coy Cmdr. were required for some sort of recce and we went in C.O.s car. Arrived Taintignies 3 a.m. and self went out again with Wilkie in C.O.s car to look for for C Coy which had gone astray, and to see Q.M. about Bn rations in Wez-Velvain. Could not find either. Met the Battalion arriving from Ere when I left the village at 3 a.m. Got back myself at 4 a.m. found empty house which I entered by window and slept well for 5 hours. Officers mess going in house beside M.T. park, and had good breakfast. Fairly quiet morning and orders to move this afternoon to Bn assembly position S of Wez-Velvain. Thence we were directed to Merlin and prepared for counter-attack to drive enemy off Western side of Escaut.
