What a fine lot of cruises,BUT they were mostly around the med, before WW11,was it that pusser didn't fancy going too far ,just in case they could not get refuelled any where......just a observation.

I expect expense must have come in to the equation Cylla - but I think it just was a case of underlying how important it was for Britain to fly the flag in the Med`.

Of course it was perceived back then to be important to visit all of the world but the Med` was seen to be very much one of our "back yards" as well as occupying a large chunk of our route to India.

Also look at all the countries that surround the Med` as well as all the other important naval bases in addition to Gibraltar, Malta and Alexandria.

Then there is the point that at that time the Med` was enjoying the close attention of the French and Italian fleets as well as many others...

You could be right Terry but i think we had an eqaul amount of vessels in both the Med and Far East stations during the 20s & 30s with such a large naval force that we had at the time it not unusual to feel that the med was a tad over crowded.
Here's a cruise chart for MARLBOROUGH that i found on shipsnostalgia throught it might be of interest.

Post Re: World Cruises with the Royal Navy

With regard to the predominantly Med cruises if you look at the deployment in the Far East our committment in the 1930s tended to be one Cruiser Squadron, one Carrier and a Destroyer Squadron. Occasionly this was supported with a Submarine Flotilla.

The Med had far more squadrons and was always supplemented by visits from the Atlantic and Home Fleets for exercises indicating that the politicians of the day considered it the place to be seen. Capital ships tended to be in the Home Fleet/Med Fleet and I think this is why more cruise cards were issued.

The Far East Fleet did cruise and I will post some of these under the Cruiser Squadrons

I dont think there were too many World Cruises from this period as ships deployed to a certain station and remained there. With the exception of the Special Service Squadron and the Royal Tours world cruises ,as we of the modern Navy know them ,didnt take place.

Keep watching this thread !!!

2 Summer cruise 1929

3 Med cruises 1928-29-30

4 Spring cruise 1931

Post Re: World Cruises with the Royal Navy

Dave

Two super cards from Sussex, I think they must have been the larger ones of which I have only seen a couple before. Nice one --keep them coming Dave as it gets a little lonely on this thread at times!!!

And now for something different...

1 2 3 The Diary of HMS HAWKINS 1932 out to Trincomalee, I am sure there are more cards in this series but these are the only three I have.

4 HMS CORNWALL 1934 UK to Hong Kong

5 Although it doesnt say so this is HMS CUMBERLAND Chatham to China 1936

Post Re: World Cruises with the Royal Navy

Dave
Look forward to that post on RESOURCE.
I have still got quite a few Cruise cards to scan in. The trouble is with the advent of e-bay the prices have rocketed and they seem scarce so am not collecting as many as a few years ago.
The post WW11 cards are very rarely seen.

Gerry

What a great collection of cruise cards! I will eventually get round to transcribing the dates and locations of the ships onto the forum, but for now it is just great to see that such a record still exists.

Great to have some feedback , thanks Terry and KC.

Also Dave who has come up with another rare bird. Suprised that one got past the censor...nice one !!!

I make no apology for only posting one card this time as I think it has to be appreciated on its own. Its certainly one of my favourites and for content and design takes a lot of beating !!

It was posted earlier in the thread but deserves another airing.

Cruise of AUTOLYCUS from Australia to UK in 1939 with the Commissioning Crew to takeover HMS AMPHION and sail her back as HMAS PERTH.
