Roosevelt Roads used to be the largest naval base in the world some 40 square miles as i recall it had everything imaginable,A self contained city exercise areas shooting ranges the lot even under ground fuel storage containing 100s of 1000s of gallons of every sort of fuel ,spent 3 months in the hospital there in 1971 you might be right it could be closed now, when i was there it was used as a facility for the extremely badly wounded from Vietnam they would come in every day by plane some very badly wounded guys spent their last days there.

Here's a couple of HMS Amphion for 1936 -37.

2. A short cruise in 1937 up the East African coast.

Thanks for all the great cruise cards. Certainly very interesting .

Cylla

Great idea of yours to start this thread. Apart from being a Postcard collector I have used the cards to date other pieces of postal history. Many of these cruises are not documented anywhere except the official ships logs and they are out of reach of most of us.

Judging by the number of hits the thread has had it appears to be popular. I will keep posting until my collection runs out !!

Post Re: World Cruises with the Royal Navy

Some more of the pre WWII cruises of the Destroyer Flotillas

1 HMS WINDSOR Summer Cruise 1933. Quite a tame cruise with Cowes probably the highlight !

2 3 HMS ANTELOPE Summer Cruises 1933 3rd DF ,all in the Eastern Med

4 HMS ARROW Spring Cruise 1933 in the Western Med

5 Arrow again Summer Cruise 1933 3rd DF, exactly the same as Antelope so they were in company.

Look what I found in my ditty box. It is not in good condition and remember that the places along the Trucial Coast were nearly all just a few mud dwellings with a Sheiks palace nearby. Nowadays there are huge modern cities there. At Bander Abbas we went ashore to play them at football. They were removing the scaffold from the dirt pitch before we began after a public hanging.
Cheers.

Thanks for that Stan.
Bander Abbas hadnt changed much when I was there in 1978. We surveyed the Straits of Hormuz for the Iranians just before the Shah was deposed. Needless to say we spent all our R & R time over the water at Dubai.

Three more from the small ships and a couple from the Mighty QE

1 HMS ACASTA Summer Cruise 1934

2 3 HMS CODRINGTON Spring Cruise 1933 and Summer Cruise 1934

4 5 HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH Two cards of the same Summer Cruise 1934. The ship was big enough to have two firms printing cards onboard for the same cruises.

Post Re: World Cruises with the Royal Navy

Four more cruises from HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH and its obvious when compared with the Destoyers Cruises the capital ships came off second-best for runs ashore.

1 Summer cruise 1933

2 Spring cruise 1934

3 Summer cruise 1934

4 Winter cruise 1934
