Post Re: World Cruises with the Royal Navy

More cruises from around the globe

1 HMS DIAMOND with the First DF Med Fleet Spring Cruise 1934

2 HMS SUPERB Flagship America and W Indies 1952-1953 Cruises

3 HMS CURACAO Second Summer cruise 1932

4 HMS COVENTRY First Summer Cruise 1934

5 HMS CURLEW Third Cruiser Squadron Ports visited 1931-1932

6 HMS ESSEX 1914-1916 Not exactly a cruise card but wartime censorship would not have allowed it. A fascinating record of how much coal was shovelled by the " black hand gang " to drive that ship around.

Nice one from the Eagle. Was that a card or from a Commission Book??

Here are some more from the 1920s and 1930s

1 to 4 HMS CURLEW Med cruises 1932-1933

5 HMS COLOMBO 1926 Cruises and Spring 1927

6 & 7 COLOMBO again in1933-34 Gulf and Indian Cruises

Hope these are appealing to some of the forum

Regards

Gerry

G'Day All

I have posted this image in another thread, but it seems that here would be as appropriate.

This is an historic image. It was taken 29 October 1988 in Fremantle Harbour. it was the first time since World War Two that there were more than six warships from more than two nations were in the harbour (RN, French and Italian Navies). All these ships were in Sydney for the Bicentennial Naval salute on 4 October 1988.

For the Royal Navy, this was the final Australian port of call for their World Cruise 'OutBack 88'

From l to r, inboard to outboard: HMS Ark Royal (R-09); FNS Colbert (C-611), FNS Commandant Bory (F-726), Admiral Charner (F-727); ITS Caio Duilio (C-554); HMS Edinburgh (D-97); RFA Fort Grange (A-385); RFA Olwen (A-122); RFA Orangeleaf (A-111)

My mates and I had a great time touring these ships. Even the lighthearted laughter when we went onboard Ark Royal and they were playing the soundtrack to Top Gun!

This was the largest RN Fleet to be in Fremantle since the late 1970's, and there has not been as large an RN fleet in Fremantle at once since.

Battlestar
Thanks for that ,I am sure that there would have been a card issued for OUTBACK 88 but I have yet to see it.

More cruises with the cruisers in the 1920s and 1930s

1 HMS CAPETOWN 1924 -1927 Commission

2 HMS CALCTTA 1923-1926 Commission

3 HMS DAUNTLESS 1925 Commission CHECK OUT the unofficial crest!!!

4 DAUNTLESS again on Pacific Cruise 1930

5 HMS DANAE Summer cruise 1933

6 HMS DANAE Spring Cruise 1933

I think Danae must have had one of the best commissions in the 1930s

Enjoy

Regards

Gerry

Post Re: World Cruises with the Royal Navy

Terry and all other members of the forum,

Some more I hope you will enjoy.

Continuing the 1920/1930 Cruisers which seemed to have the monopoly on good "runs ashore" !!!!

1 HMS DANAE Trip to Washington 1933 (Apologys for poor quality it is on the original )

2 DANAEs 1934 Summer Cruise

3 HMS DELHI World Tour 1923-1924 . I included this one as it ties together this squadron and why there were so many cruise cards from them.

4 DELHI again with the 8th CS and the 3rd CS 1932-1934

Regards

Gerry

5 This card breaks down the Spring cruise of 1933 on card 4.

6 HMS DIOMEDE Cruises in the Far East 1923

Hi Gerry, See post 37 this thread, that was the only Outback 88 stuff that made it to Fremantle after the hoards in Sydney ransacked the ships on the only open day (300, 000+ turned up to tour nearly 30 ships!)

Nice ones Dave. I really appreciate the fact that you seem to have the more up to date stuff whereas my PCs are mainly pre WW11 and post WW1. Looks like we cover quite a period of "Showing the Flag"
