As I have previously said Gerry - the amateur examples are just as interesting IMO as the more professional ones and as well have a charm of their own!

Terry

I think the ship made cards were probably printed in small quantities and to be fair under primitive conditions compared to the tools at OUR disposal. They do have a certain charm although I feel that some of the larger ships could have made a better effort.

The commercial prints seem to be more available suggesting it was a longer print run.

I am suprised that so few of our forum have posted on this thread compared with ordinary photos, the cruise cards to my mind are a historical document and contain info sometimes not found in the ships dockets at the records office.

gerry

Gerry - if you mean you dont know why more members have not submitted these cards - then IMO it is just because they are quite scarce to get hold of these days.

If you mean you dont know why more members have not expressed interest, then I cannot explain it either - as you rightly pointed out these cards are nothing short of being excellent historical documents...

Post Re: World Cruises with the Royal Navy

On to the Battlewagons around the med in the 1920-30s

1 HMS RENOWN Spring Cruise 1935, lot of detail packed in including the ships crest and a copy of a Gib stamp which depicted the Battleship

2 HMS REPULSE Summer Cruise 1931, a very detailed map and a very simple cruise.

3 Atlantic Fleet led by HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH on Med Cruise in 1920. Nice montage of the places visited and some of the Fleet. No dates on this one.

4.5. Ist and 2nd Summer cruises in 1932 for Q.ELIZABETH

More cruises from 1922 to 1956

1 HMS VALIANT 1928 ports visited built up to a Xmas card

2 Same idea for HMS REVENGE Spring cruise 1922 Gib and Spain

3 A mammoth record of the two years 1936-1938 of HMS GALATEA. A terrific amount of detail in this card.

4 HMS NEWCASTLE enroute for the Far East June 1956.

5 First cruise for HMS LIVERPOOL in 1939

6 LIVERPOOL again 12 years later as Flagship in the Med.

Another excellent batch of cruise cards Gerry!
In particular what a wonderful card the one of HMS Galatea was.
Simply superb!

Got to agree with you Terry the Galatea card is a cracker !

I think they left out the routes on the north sea card you posted, it would have trawled all over it.

They are a nice set of cards and becoming quite difficult to find ;perhaps we should do a thread on Patriotic cards of that type in the future. Meanwhile I will keep dragging out the cruise cards.

G'day All

Well now, over the years I've seen the Royal Navy here in Fremantle all due to these great world cruises. 1983 with Invincible, 1986 with Illustrious, 1988 Outback with Ark Royal, Orient 1992 with Boxer, 1997 Ocean wave with Illustrious.

I'm putting the artwork that I have from these cruises on this post as well as...here it is, the RAREST patch I have, and the only Royal Navy deployment patch I've ever seen! Oh I included a image of the badge of the reason 820 Sqn was out here, the Australian Bicentennial Naval Salute 1988.

Enjoy

Dave - great poem and postcard.

Gerry- Sorry to be rude - any more of these fantastic cards my friend?

It has got to the stage recently where the first thing I do when I arrive in the forum is to look and see if you have posted any cruise or multi-ship postcards!

Also did you see my bit about the patriotic cards?

Really good to see some Cruise cards from after WW11. They dont seem as common as those produced in the 1930s.

Any more would be appreciated.

Terry

Many tks for those kind words and PM.

Been preoccupied the last few days with RNA and Trafalgar Night Dinner.

Back to business and some more 1930 Destroyer Cruise cards.

1. Fourth DF Autumn 1931

2. Second DF Summer Cruise Undated

3. HMS DEFENDER Persian Gulf 1933

4 HMS DUNCAN Second Summer Cruise 1933

5.6 HMS DECOY First/Second Summer Cruises 1933

Although some of the cruises appear duplicated it does show the variety of ports the Flotillas visited..

Three cards for HMAS Perth (1).

The color tinted photo was the intended world cruise in 1939 for HMAS Perth. Unfortunately she only reached the Caribbean and WW2 started so several of the ports shown didn't happen.

The the second photo shows the "amended" world cruise.

The third photo shows the cruise from Australia to the Med in 1940.

All drawings were produced on board apparently by crew member Ray Parkin who was quite a skilled artist.

Would like to see any cruise cards for HMS Amphion 1933-36 if anyone has them.
Cheers
Bruce

Thanks for those. The only one I had seen before was the LION. I have got an original "Gestetner" version of that and I didnt know a card existed.

My interest is that I was on that cruise as a young REM ! We were trying to sell British equipment to the S American Navy`s and I got the job of drawing block diagrams of our radio equipment and labelling them in Portugese or whatever the local lingo was.

Memories of huge steaks, beautiful girls and learning to do Chubby Checkers Twist in a "house of ill-repute" outside Callao !!! HAPPY DAYS !!!

Can`t help you out with AMPHION Bruce although I know she visited Ascension Is in 1936 when part of the 8th Cruiser Squadron on the America W.Indies Station.

Thanks for the Perth cards ,really good . the only one I had seen was that superb colour card for the World Cruise which got aborted.

More cuise cards from the earlier cruisers

1. Summer cruise of 1924 HMS CONQUEST with the 1st SM Flotilla , all around the previous hunting ground of the Baltic and Riga.

2. 1923-1925 HMS CONSTANCE on North and South America Station

3. HMS CONCORD 1928 to the Far East.

4. Diary of HMS CONCORD in the Med 1926-1927.

5. HMS CALEDON in the Med ,unfortunately not dated and ports not named as there was probably a diary card to go with it.

6. HMS CALYPSO in the Med 1922, no dates and decommissioning date not completed.

7. HMS BIRMINGHAM 1926-1927 S.African Station, best seen in the large mode.
