A couple from the album. I am not sure which cruiser is in the background of the shot of Triumph alongside Palatorio Wharf. These were taken in 1949 after our refit in the floating dock in French Creek.

I have added Lascaris Wharf as you might just make out the Dreadnaught Bar where we bought our lodging tickets for the Iron Duke a couple of doors down. It was a great pleasure on a Sunday when we had seven bell leave to lie in bed with a cup of tea watching the rest of the ships company at Divisions on the flight dack. One of life's minor pleasures.

KENT Alongside in Grand Harbour June 2006
There's only one thing missing from these pictures and that Dhaigsa's ,When i first came to Malta in the early 70s there was 100s of them all you had to do was shout and a dozen or more came racing across to pick you up,
Now you have to ring him on his mobile and be told he'll be with you in 20 minutes how times have changed,
Anyone know when they all disappeared ?and where do old Dhaigsa's go ?

Regards
Dave

Terrific pictures once again Dave many thanks for them.
Tell me , when was the Barracca lift dismantled and has anybody got a decent photograph of it?
There seem to be a limited amount about and they are all in black and white.

Bob.

Joseph,
Can you tell me where the seamans mission went to,? on my last visit to Malta my wife Heather and i walked all over the area but could''t find it ,Am i right in thinking that the building is now used as the customs house ?
I spent many a happy weekend living there shame it's all gone now.
I also found that my favorite bar the Black Cat Bar in Senglia is now a garage spent many happy bliss hours ratted in there.
Regards
Dave

Your photos of Depot ships Dave (Rum Rat) brought 2 more Malta memories flooding back. Aerial photo of Forth in Msida Creek showed the 2 well-deck cranes and they were my first personal responsibilty as a young Tiff when I joined Forth in 1953.
The other memory is of hundreds of young male and female Maltese over the months leaving Valletta by ocean liners to start new lives in Australia and New Zealand. The Malta Times would publish the names of those leaving and the shores of the harbour were crowded with their families. Rob T

I never thought to mention this before but this site is worth logging on to for a bit of nostalgia:-

http://www.visitmalta.com/main

Click on Live web camera and keep up to date with the ships that daily visit the island.
The shots are taken regularly as you can follow the small boats across the harbour.
I only wish there were more cameras and more views, let us know what you think.

Bob.

Joseph,

Thank you for posting various photos - I have a couple of observations about the two ships shown as Castle class in post #88. They were two of the five Castle class ships completed as convoy rescue ships, and never sailed as warships. They were classified as merchant ships (and therefore not "HMS"); the ex-BARNARD CASTLE was renamed EMPIRE SHELTER, and the MAIDEN CASTLE became EMPIRE LIFEGUARD. After the war I believe they were occasionally used as troopships.

Tim
