Although obviously not a tank - I thought I would add this Austin Aumbulance pictured after it had been shattered by shell-fire at Verdun...

A few more postcards/photo`s I have picked up that might be of interest.
The first one shows an early Canadian tank being used at Toronto for the purpose of raising war-loans during the First World War. Obviously part of its impressive demonstrations was to make mincemeat out of an unwanted car. The second is of three Japanese light tanks seen in action in Manchuria during the 1930`s. The third although not strictly speaking a full-blown tank is Citroens 1931 hybrid armoured car. It does appear a bit under-gunned but is interesting nevertheless! The fourth is of a British Tank on display around 1922 in the Royal de L`Armee Museum in Brussels. The fifth is a photograph of a very rare 1930`s Danish armoured motor-cycle which was known as a Forsoegpanservogn... And finally a stirring painting of 2 early British tanks at Cambrai 1917 - unfortunately I have no idea of the postcard artist in this case...

I am sorry - I have just realised that number 5 above I had already posted. To partly make up for this mistake - another postcard of WW1 vintage - again artist unknown other than initials GH.

I have only just remembered about this old thread.
In order to breathe a little life into it here are a couple more photographs. The first one is of a MK V and the second - possibly my favourite tank ever the classic 1950`s British Centurion MK I followed finally with a later Centurion MK III now preserved at the Worthington Tank Museum at CFB Borden (Ontario, Canada). The Centurion first entered service with the British Army soon after the end of WW2 and was still being used up to a few years ago by the Israeli Army - albeit not in a front line role. Not many other military vehicles can boast of half a century of useage!

Anyway the American tank you mention situated as a memorial at Bastogne is a completely renovated Sherman as you rightly guessed. It was I believe originally part of the 11th US Armoured Division. I include a picture of it here for you, along with a couple of shots of Shermans from 1943 followed by an excellent old photo of British WW1 tanks L8 and L9 taken I presume at the end of hostilities. No need to say tanks!

I passed this lot heading eastwards on the M4 some years ago. Later that morning whilst leaving Leigh Delamere Services I quickly took this snapshot as they all pulled in. Their occupation of the car park was totally unopposed.

This photo was taken sometime in the early 1950's by my uncle, not sure if it's a tank or armoured car though. Kevin.

I wonder if it has an open top, it seems too small to be enclosed.
Kevin.

Sorry Kevin it is totally different!
Although they are both German the top photo example has a turret unlike the bottom example which I am fairly sure is not a tank but a tank-destroyer called the jagdpanther....

You're right Terry, you can tell they're different by the pattern on the ground as well. The other photos I took all have the kids in !! Kevin.

The first German tank is a tiger 2 equipped with a Henschell turret. The armour was over 18cm thick on the turret. The coating is of antimagnetic materiel to prevent the use of anti-tank mines on its surface.
The main gun is the famous 88mm gun. There was also a Porsche turret available on the other version...... Very hefty but only outgunned by the russian "stalin" tank....... ![]()

The second is the tank destroyer........
It is intresting to note that three principal versions of this tank continued their service until the early nineties in Germany. Jagdpanzer kanone using a conventional tank gun of 90mm Jagdpanzer rakete (SS 11) armed with franco-german SS 11 anti tank missiles. Jagdpanzer rakete (HOT) armed with franco-german HOT anti tank missiles (3000 metres range) ![]()
