A few more postcards/photo`s I have picked up that might be of interest.

The first one shows an early Canadian tank being used at Toronto for the purpose of raising war-loans during the First World War.
Obviously part of its impressive demonstrations was to make mincemeat out of an unwanted car.

The second is of three Japanese light tanks seen in action in Manchuria during the 1930`s.

The third although not strictly speaking a full-blown tank is Citroens 1931 hybrid armoured car. It does appear a bit under-gunned but is interesting nevertheless!

The fourth is of a British Tank on display around 1922 in the Royal de L`Armee Museum in Brussels.

The fifth is a photograph of a very rare 1930`s Danish armoured motor-cycle which was known as a Forsoegpanservogn...

And finally a stirring painting of 2 early British tanks at Cambrai 1917 - unfortunately I have no idea of the postcard artist in this case...

I have only just remembered about this old thread.

In order to breathe a little life into it here are a couple more photographs.

The first one is of a MK V and the second - possibly my favourite tank ever the classic 1950`s British Centurion MK I followed finally with a later Centurion MK III now preserved at the Worthington Tank Museum at CFB Borden (Ontario, Canada).

The Centurion first entered service with the British Army soon after the end of WW2 and was still being used up to a few years ago by the Israeli Army - albeit not in a front line role. Not many other military vehicles can boast of half a century of useage!

Derek - that really is lazy!! How long does it take to plug in a scanner - and I'm not a scannerdinavian! Come on now how will you be able to upload your prized photographs and pictures, if you do not complete this vital little task!

Anyway the American tank you mention situated as a memorial at Bastogne is a completely renovated Sherman as you rightly guessed.
It was I believe originally part of the 11th US Armoured Division.

I include a picture of it here for you, along with a couple of shots of Shermans from 1943 followed by an excellent old photo of British WW1 tanks L8 and L9 taken I presume at the end of hostilities.

No need to say tanks!

Almost like a cross between a small armoured troop carrier and a bren-gun carrier??

Smile Re: TERRY`S TANK GALLERY...

The first German tank is a tiger 2 equipped with a Henschell turret. The armour was over 18cm thick on the turret. The coating is of antimagnetic materiel to prevent the use of anti-tank mines on its surface.

The main gun is the famous 88mm gun.

There was also a Porsche turret available on the other version......

Very hefty but only outgunned by the russian "stalin" tank.......

Smile Re: TERRY`S TANK GALLERY...

The second is the tank destroyer........

It is intresting to note that three principal versions of this tank continued their service until the early nineties in Germany.

Jagdpanzer kanone using a conventional tank gun of 90mm

Jagdpanzer rakete (SS 11) armed with franco-german SS 11 anti tank missiles.

Jagdpanzer rakete (HOT) armed with franco-german HOT anti tank missiles (3000 metres range)

Captain Charles Vane was born in 1680, and was an English pirate who preyed upon English and French shipping. Vane began piracy in 1716 and lasted 3 years. Vane captured a Barbados sloop and then a large 12-gun brigantine, which he renamed the Ranger. Vane was among the pirate captains who operated out of the Bohama at the notorious base at New Providence after the colony had been abandoned by the British. His pirate attacks made Captain Charles Vane well known to the Royal Navy and in February of 1718 Vincent Pearse, commander of HMS Phoenix cornered Vane on his ship the Lark. Vane had heard of the recent royal pardons that had been offered to pirates in exchange for a guarantee they would quit plundering, so Vane claimed he had actually been en route to surrender to Pearse and accepted the pardon on the spot, Charle Vane gained his freedom but as soon as he was free of Pearse he ignored the pardon and resumed his pirate ways. Charles Vane was again captured and in 1721 was executed by hanging at Gallows Point, Port Royal, Jamaica on March 29th 1721.
