Cool Information request on old Soviet Naval Radars
A somewhat unusual request but one I hope someone can help me with.

I am looking for information on two old Soviet naval radars from immediately after World War 2. They are:

Redan-2, (NATO ASCC - SWORDFISH) a surface target fire control radar found mostly on the FOUR EYES director control tower (the russians called it the KDP2-4) of the Project 30K and early Project 30-bis (SKORYY) class destroyers.

Vympel-2, (NATO ASCC - FIRE IRON), an anti-aircraft fire control radar found on the CYLINDER HEAD (SVP-29RLM) director also used on these ships.

I have Friedman's book on Naval Radar and Conways' All The Worlds Fighting Ships 1947-1995 and I have seen the Navweaps.com site on Russian Naval Radars in WW2.

What I am looking for is information on frequency, wavelength, accuracy and resolution and whether or not they were capable of blind fire (e.g did they have beam or lobe switching to increase bearing accuracy and so on). I have pictures of both these radars and I can make some guesses on these but I am hoping someone has something more definitive.

If you have a listing for sources for this information, please let me know that as well.

I have noted in a blog/forum today reference made to the book entitled A radar history of World War II: technical and military imperatives, which I have not read so don't know if it will be of any assistance.

Louis Brown is the author of that book and I have read it. Thanks for that suggestion. I wasn't looking for these specific pieces of information when I read it so I shall check it out again.

Got the book again via inter-library loan. With regret, it has no information on the two radars in question.

Still looking, I guess. Any information on the radars or possible sources other than the ones already consulted, (listed previously) is appreciated.

HMS Glowworm, burning severely after receiving hits from the mighty Admiral Hipper, is depicted turning to begin her heroic sacrifice off the Norwegian coast on 8th April 1940. Hugely out-gunned and already crippled, Glowworms captain, Lieutenant-Commander Roope rammed his destroyer into the side of the Admiral Hipper, inflicting a 40 metre rip in its armour belt before drifting away and exploding. 38 British sailors were rescued from the sea and Roope was awarded a posthumous VC for his bravery, the first earned by the Royal Navy in WWII.

On 17th June 1944, 780 miles west of Saipan in Mid Pacific, the Gato class submarine USS Cavalla dives after a lucky sighting of a Japanese Naval Task Force, which included the aircraft carriers Taiho, Shokaku and Zuikaku. The Cavalla then trailed the Japanese, attacking and sinking the Shokaku on the 19th.

The success of the attack on the Möhne dam on the night of 16th/17th May 1943 meant that the remaining three 617 Sqn Lancasters of the First Wave could turn their attention to the Eder, some twelve minutes flying time away. Wing Commander Guy Gibson first called in Flight Lieutenant D J Shannon, flying AJ-L (ED929G) to make the initial run, but he had great difficulty achieving the correct height and approach, so Gibson now ordered Squadron Leader H E Maudslay in AJ-Z (ED937G) to make his run. Again, the aircraft struggled to find the correct height and direction, so Shannon was again brought in, AJ-L finally releasing its <i>Upkeep</i> on the third attempt. The bomb bounced twice before exploding with no visible effect on the dam. Now Maudslay made another attempt, but released his bomb too late. The mine bounced off of the dam wall and exploded in mid air right behind AJ-Z, the Lancaster limping away, damaged, from the scene, only to be shot down on the way home with the loss of all crew. Finally, Pilot Officer Les Knight was called in for one final attempt. AJ-N (ED912G) released its <i>Upkeep</i> perfectly, the mine bouncing three times before striking the dam slightly to the south. In the ensuing explosion, the dam was seen to shake visibly before the masonry began to crumble and a massive breach appeared. With the Möhne and Eder dams both destroyed and the Sorpe demonstrated to be equally vulnerable, <i>Operation Chastise</i> had been a remarkable success and will stand forever as one of the most heroic and audacious attacks in the history of aerial warfare.

Half Price! - £1300.00 		On the morning of 21st April 1917, coastal airship No C.17 was on a routine patrol captained by Sub Lieutenant E G O Jackson, when sometime around 8.00am, she was attacked by German seaplanes and shot down. Such was their vulnerability that these huge battlebags were an easy target for marauding enemy scouts, their single Lewis guns achieving little by way of defence. The Hansa Brandenburg W.12, on the other hand, was a nimble and useful aircraft that the Germans put to good use in the coastal defence role.

After almost two months of continuous fighting in the front line, remnants of the 12th SS Panzer Division, Hitler Jugend, fall back under incessant air attacks by allied fighter bombers for their final battles in France. In their defense of the northern flank of what is to become the Falaise Gap the new Jagdpanzer IV in particular is to prove a formidable foe to the attacking British and Canadian tanks.

Fortunately Coy Cmdr. were required for some sort of recce and we went in C.O.s car. Arrived Taintignies 3 a.m. and self went out again with Wilkie in C.O.s car to look for for C Coy which had gone astray, and to see Q.M. about Bn rations in Wez-Velvain. Could not find either. Met the Battalion arriving from Ere when I left the village at 3 a.m. Got back myself at 4 a.m. found empty house which I entered by window and slept well for 5 hours. Officers mess going in house beside M.T. park, and had good breakfast. Fairly quiet morning and orders to move this afternoon to Bn assembly position S of Wez-Velvain. Thence we were directed to Merlin and prepared for counter-attack to drive enemy off Western side of Escaut.
