Default Service Record: Alfred Rhodes - HMS Wishart etc

Hi, I am trying to find out a little more about my grandad, Alf Rhodes, and his history. What I have so far:

He served on both HMS Wishart & Cleopatra as a stoker and we have various pictures of things he saw and others of his 'pals' on the ships. The names we have are

On the Wishart:

F. Newbury
Townsend
Hinton
Fields
Barnes
Wilke
Stone
Clifford
Gent

other names which could be from either ship are:
T Harris (in the boiler room)
T Briggs (STO messdeck)

He also served at HMS Royal Arthur in class 112.

Anyone recognising these names or the ships it would be brilliant if you would get in touch. Even to be able to share these pictures with the families of the man would be good or if they have pictures of my grandad.

Kelly - welcome to the forum.

There is no need to repeat the same message in three different threads so I have removed the other two!

Lets hope you get some feedback to your request.

Hi my grandfather served as a stoker on hms wishart during ww2. His name was Tom field, I am wondering if he is the fields in your list ? Would be great if you had any pictures of him as we don't have many . We have some that he took during the war, I will find them out and see if any of the crew are on them and possibly your grandfather.

Hello Gav and a warm welcome to the Forums. I have emailed Kelly to ask if she would add her photos to the thread and it would be great if you could do likewise.

Hello Gav
If you follow the instructions on this thread you should be able to upload your photos, bearing in mind the file size limits, ie jpegs no larger than 1.9Mb in size, but try and scan them to around 300dpi so that they remain clear. If you have any ongoing problems send me a Private Message and I will guide you through, or upload them for you.

Toby, I have just been speaking to Derek Shepherd, a shipmate of your Grandfather on HMS WISHART. Derek (known as "Shep") sounds just great on the phone but he says his "pins" are not so good. How is your grand father? If still alive Derek would like his new address so that he can get in touch. They joined the WISHART on the same day. And I would be interested in adding your grandfather's memories and photographs of HMS WISHART to the web site of the V & W DESTROYER ASSOCIATION.

See: http://vandwdestroyerassociation.org...art/index.html

I would be interested in hearing from the families of other men who served on HMS WISHART.

I printed out copies of these photographs and sent them to Ron Rendle and Derek Shepherd who served on HMS WISHART and was disappointed to find neither could recognise any of the men in the photograps.

Ron was a torpedoman on the depth charges at the stern and Derek Shepherd was an AB and with up to 160 men on WISHART it is hardly surprising that the only men they could remember were in their own mess.

Ron is 97 and Derek a few years younger but both are in good health.

I have tried to contact "Gav Mac" and Kelly Porter by sending private messages but since neither has (as far as I can tell) visited the site for some years it is unlikely that they will ever see them. I decided to put "cleaned up" versions of several of the photographs on the web site of the V & W DESTROYER ASSOCIATION: http://vandwdestroyerassociation.org...t/company.html

And hope that family members visiting the site will be able to identify some of them and will get in touch but if anybody has an e-mail for Kelly or "Gav Mac" i would like to hear from them via the web page on the V & W site.

I am now in touch with Toby Seaman, the grandson of Colin Seaman who served on HMS WISHART. Colin has now spoken to his former shipmate, Derek Shepherd.

And I have told their stories on the web site of the V & W DESTROYER ASSOCIATION: http://vandwdestroyerassociation.org...art/index.html

But am still hoping to hear from others who served on WISHART and have stories to tell. Including those who posted about family members on this thread - several years ago!

Default Re: Thanking the men on HMS Wishart

I have interviewed three of the men on HMS WISHART when the Hunt Class destroyer HMS BLEAN was torpedoed on 11 December 1942.

Derek Shepherd received a letter from 92 year old Jim Watson, one of the men saved, thanking him and the ships company for saving his life. Jim has a family who would not have been born had he not been rescued.

I phoned Jim yesterday and he told me the story of his rescue. I have passed on his thanks by publishing his letter and the description of his rescue on the web site of the V & W DESTROYER ASSOCIATION.

See: http://vandwdestroyerassociation.org...art/index.html

And I am hoping the families of members of the ship's company who have posted on this Forum will read this post and Jim's letter
