Russian battleship Imperator Nikolai I, surrendered to the IJN at Tsushima, on 6 June 1905, she was taken into the Imperial Japanese Navy and renamed Iki, after Iki Island in the Sea of Japan, near site of the Battle of Tsushima. She served as a gunnery training ship until 12 December 1910 when she was redesignated as a first-class coast defense ship and a training vessel.[8]

It's a former USCG cutter of the "Hamilton" class. Due to being painted hazegrey I expect it to be either BRP Ramon Alcaraz (ex USCGC Dallas), BRP Gregorio del Pilar (ex USCGC Hamilton) or NNS Thunder (ex USCGC Chase). As there's neither flag nor hullnumber visible I can't say for sure which of these vessels is shown.

They look like the German Type 520 Barbe class LCUs (presumably up the Rhine or Elbe, though I can't identify the bridge)

So name this ship from ww 1. Similar in origin to a ship that was the first of her kind in Ww2 . She served for some time in the navy before being commissioned into it. She experienced a probable first for her kind of ship. She started life in the hands of one of Britain's enemies and ended it in the service of another. In some ways she was not alone . But the ship she shared something with had little else in common.

A second ship in the Royal Navy she was almost an American and for a short period she was a member of the aristocracy. some Ionian sausages came off the menu to her advantage .She carried a seaplane Her successor still lives in London in part

Which ships are they?
What connects these two ships ?

The first ship could be the ANNE (ANNE RICKMERS).

Which war are we talking about in the second paragraph?

The first ship is HMS Raven II which started life in German hands...commissioned into the Royal Navy ....and was sunk during WWII whilst in Japanese hands.

The second ship, I think, is HMS Anne (Aenne Rickmers). Apart from serving together on various operations the only thing I can think of that they shared was aircraft and crew members. HMS Anne had been damaged and Raven II took off her aircraft and some crew members at Mudros in WW1

regards...John

Captain Charles Vane was born in 1680, and was an English pirate who preyed upon English and French shipping. Vane began piracy in 1716 and lasted 3 years. Vane captured a Barbados sloop and then a large 12-gun brigantine, which he renamed the Ranger. Vane was among the pirate captains who operated out of the Bohama at the notorious base at New Providence after the colony had been abandoned by the British. His pirate attacks made Captain Charles Vane well known to the Royal Navy and in February of 1718 Vincent Pearse, commander of HMS Phoenix cornered Vane on his ship the Lark. Vane had heard of the recent royal pardons that had been offered to pirates in exchange for a guarantee they would quit plundering, so Vane claimed he had actually been en route to surrender to Pearse and accepted the pardon on the spot, Charle Vane gained his freedom but as soon as he was free of Pearse he ignored the pardon and resumed his pirate ways. Charles Vane was again captured and in 1721 was executed by hanging at Gallows Point, Port Royal, Jamaica on March 29th 1721.

Almost every major invasion that took place in Europe in World War II began with para drops, and in almost every case the C-47 was the aircraft that delivered these elite fighting troops. Few C-47 pilots had more combat experience than Sid Harwell, seen flying his Dakota in this typical action scene, dropping airborne troops into occupied Europe soon after D-Day. No matter what resistance he encountered, the good C-47 pilot put his aircraft right over the Dropping Zone, every time.

1st June 1940 - Pete Peters fights off overwhelming attack over Dunkirk and destroys three fighters. Anson MKV flown by pilot officer Phillip Peters was leading a petrol of three Ansons of No 500 Royal Auxiliary Air Force Squadron over Dunkirk at the time the British Expeditionary Forces were evacuating from the beaches. He was flying at around 50ft when his mid upper gunner reported that nine Bf109s were attacking. Dropping to wave-top height the slow obsolescent twin engined aircraft tried to shake off their pursuers. Two planes were severely damaged and Peters sent them home, leaving his own aircraft at the mercy of the enemy fighters.

Half Price! - £120.00
The afternoon of 25th July 1940 was a desperate one for the already exhausted fighter pilots of the RAF defending the South coast of England. As convoy CW8 made its way through the English Channel, sixty JU.87 Stukas and forty JU.88 bombers launched a brutal attack on the ships below, backed up by fighter cover of over 50 Messerscmitt Bf.109s. Eight Spitfires of 64 Sqn (Kenley) were scrambled, together with twelve Spitfires of 54 Sqn (Hornchurch) and Hurricanes of 111 Sqn from Croydon. The British pilots found themselves massively outnumbered, but nevertheless put up a spirited fight against the teeming enemy. This painting shows Spitfires of 54 Sqn entering the fray, the pilots scattering as they choose their targets and go after the JU.87s. To the right of this, Bf.109Es of JG.26 are roaring in to join battle, whilst Adolf Gallands aircraft engages a Hurricane of 111 Sqn.
