Default Types of service

Hello all
I have had the service record of an ancestor for many years, which shows that he signed up for 10 years continuous service on 2 April 1870. However, I have recently found another record for him which shows that he had served from March 1859-March 1867 & also 12 Jan 1870 to 1 April 1870.
3 questions - the earlier 8 years were not continuous service so how was he employed - did he approach the ship's captain & obtain employment for a given period, then do the same once that period ended ?
Would he have received a pension in 1870 at the end of his 10 years ?
Would the earlier service have counted towards any pension ?

Help appreciated in understanding this !
